This is from a blog that my wife follows called The Pioneer Woman. Anyway cool pic.'s. I have never gotten to see anything like this. http://thepioneerwoman.com/blog/2014/10/nature/

Very cool pictures!

I watched a red tailed hawk catch a snake about half the size and take it up maybe 2-250 feet in the air and drop it on the nearby pavement and gravel! It did that 3 times as my crew and I sat watching! Took all the fight out of the snake. For whatever reason , it flew away with a limp snake in its claws. Maybe to a nest of young ones??

Have seen a Peregrine Falcon catch a pigeon in flight, Red tails catch mice, Bald eagles and Osprey catch fish, but I have never seen any hawk catch a snake.

Hi,

I've seen hawks, mostly red tails, carrying snakes--a couple of them pretty sizable--but always missed the actual "catch." Raised pigeons in HS and we lost a few of them to hawks. That was pretty impressive to watch, though it's pretty certain the pigeons had different thoughts.

Stationed in the Aleutian Islands for my sins 50 years ago, I had ringside seats from the high rise barracks area over open fields that were regularly hunted by a pair of Great Snowy Owls. One would slide along the ground contours like a modern jet fighter while the other did tight circles way the hell up there. Anything that bolted in the grass or even quivered overmuch brought a steep attack from the higher Owl. Never saw them miss. A good pair of binocs ,a comfortable chair , and a cooler of PX beer made for an interesting afternoon. Of course the nearest woman to us was a Soviet Cosmonaut miles overhead!

I've been bombed while working on my boat in the Ketchikan harbor several times by gulls breaking open clams. They would climb overhead and drop them on the concrete walkways on the floats. Sometimes they'd really make a mess.
