The latest issue has some interesting lead bullet articles, even with Ruger sa's.
Pearce, Haviland, and Venturino.
I had forgotten a lot of the Thompson bullet story.

It was interesting to see the article on how different alloys performed. There was little difference at any speed or hardness. Even gas checks didn't make much difference.

I'm sure somewhere, some hardcast junkie is throwing a fit..

I shhot about 95% cast. Very interesting article. I think it is one of those that has to be read a couple of times to absorb.

Thanks for the heads up Dobe. Sounds very interesting, I'll be buying the latest issue.

I find most handloader issues need to be read a couple times. One thing for sure you can't read it in fron a a TV!

Just got my copy, looks like some good stuff to ponder again.

I flip through it quickly, then go back later & enjoy the various topics when I have more time.

It is also my favorite read as well. :)

Just picked the latest issue up a couple days ago....

Yeah, Handloader is the only magazine I pick up on a 'consistent' basis. I've have skipped a few that didn't have what I was interested in (rifle calibers for example). I enjoy Brian's articles and the data has been good. I've used it and proved it in .44Spec and .45 Colt. His insight has helped me to 'extend' the usage of the .45 Colt into Tier 2 loads and be comfortable with doing that in my medium frame revolvers.

Ok,, I've been looking locally, and none of the stores I know of have this magazine. We used to have a "Books-A-Million" but they closed down.

I would like to find a copy. Anybody around here want to get one & send it to me??

Thanks guys. I checked the wally world, the local Ingles, (they have a fair selection of gun rags,) and the local Barnes & Noble. No luck. The old Books -a million used to have an excellent magazine selection, but they are gone,,,!
Just let me know if you get one Robb & I'll pay ya for it!
If Robb doesn't find it,, Rainman,,, I'll post to you!

Why not just subscribe to the magazine and be done with it. If you just want the article on cast bullets I could scan and print that one up. I need to know if it's the one by John Haviland though. You cam PM or E-mail me a snail mail address and I can get it off to you.

I usually learn something about guns, reloading, casting, etc. that I did not know about before. I like the historical stuff they do - I also like the way Brian Pierce writes and his fondness for Rugers.

I have a subscription for it and Rifle and bought my friend ayear of each for Christmas (he was getting mine to read every month anyway). They aren't that high for 1-2 years compared to the newsstand prices.

On page 69, there's a couple of paragraphs on Measuring Obturation. Does anybody understand what the hell that guy is trying to say.

I read mine ON a TV. ;).

I no longer have aTV. Well, no cable anyway. it's strictly for watching movies.

I think I understand what Pearce is trying to say. First off, you have to find a way to shoot the bullet and recover it without it's being all mangled up.
Then taking the bullets you want to test you have to measure the lube groove and record the number. After lubing, loading, shooting, recovering the bullet et al then you measure the lube groove again after cleaning it out of lube. if it has stayed the same or gotten smaller, no obturation and you'll have gas cutting. If the dimension has grown larger then you have obturation.
Leastways, that's how I interpret it. I remember reading where some guy tested for obturation by removing the barrel and shooting the gun that way. Muzzle blast certainly made the bullet's base get larger. I do rememebr the pictures that cam with the article.
Personally, and this is just my personal opinion but I think Scovill's method is not accurate. But then I met the man one day at the range. I'll leave it at that. I also wrote Handloader magazine about what I considered a serious error on their part. I did receive a non-too friendly reply from Scovill that it didn't matter. Oh really?
It had to do with an article on the .375/338 Wildcat. The drawing of the cartidge was the .375 Epstein. The two cartridges are exactly the same with one exception. The Epstein has a much longer neck and is made using .375 H&H brass which is run through the sizing die, then trimmed to the proper lenght and reamed either inside or outside, I forget which. If you stuck the Epstein into the .375/338 mag. and managed to get it to chamber, the results on firing would be spectacular and the shooter may be in need of an ambulance or maybe even the coronor.
I'd been shooting the round for over a year when that article came out and couldn't figure out why my brass was way too short according to the diagram. Then I thought, "Epstein", looked that article up and wrote my letter. I have had little respect for Scovill since that time.
Oh well, I hope my explanation cleared that up some. It was about I could figure out from what was in the article.

He did some kind of test on lube capacity and then turned it into a test of obturation and straightened it all out about as well as a bowl of spaghetti.

They have this issue at the Bi-Mart store in McMinnville, Robb. If you want, I can pick it up and mail to Contender no problem.

Contender, just pm me your mailing address and I can send it out tomorrow or Weds at the latest.

Oops,,, I thought I had already posted that Rainman got me a copy!
I do appreciate the help guys. I've managed to read it up to the article on loading lead in the 44 mag. It's hard to get down time to read quietly around here.
