The skeeter load will work just fine. That's 7.5g Unique under ~240g SWC. I use it in all my .44 Specials with the exception of the CA Bulldog. Good load then ... good load now.

I think it depends on how you view this gun/cartridge combination.

I don't see it as a particularly heavy version of a .44 Sp. Actually it measures out very similar to the Smith 696. I use the 696 as a highly portable woods gun that provides ample protection against things like cougars, black bears and even feral hogs, but I don't think it is that useful as a deer hunting tool and for concealed carry there are better choices. For the woods protection gun, I like a 240 gr. SWC loaded to about 900 fps and I think it is gun enough for that.

I bought my GP 44 sp. to compare to the 696 and after looking it over and taking some measurements, I am gonna stick with the Smith. 8)

I like HP-38 (5.2gr) with a 240gr copper plated bullet. 858 fps 13,200 CUP by the book.

I have a Charter Arms Bulldog with a 2.5 inch barrel. It likes the 240 gr lswc over 14 grs of 2400. Good luck.

My current go to 44 Special reload is
240gr Lead Round Nose Flat Point Laser Cast
or a Lead Semi Wad Cutter.
5.0grs of Alliant Red Dot
CCI or S&B large pistol primer
Brass, Win. or Rem.
Feet per Second Approx. 800
For lead free barrels I tumble lube with Ben's
L.L. (to me this extra step is worth it).

Other powders I like are; Unique, Bullseye,
and American Select.

Always do the Research along with suggested reloads.

The only load you'll ever need for the .44spl!

I've experimented with Titegroup, Trail Boss, W231, HS6, Red Dot...they all work, but nothing works as well as 7.5 grs. of Unique under a 240gr SWC. FWIW, you won't find it listed in any mauals. You can thank Charter Arms for that, they forced the .44 spl into becoming an anemic 800 fps turd

250 grain Keith over 8.0 of power pistol is an excellent load in .44 special.
This has been my go to load for a while. It shoots well in all of my .44 specials.

This load works very well in my GP100 3" .44.
