I can't be certain but if his first cut was in front of the RIFLE's chamber, he instantly became a FELON due to 'construction of a short barrel rifle w/o possessing the proper NFA approval stamp'.

I must say I did the same with a bunch of my self manufactured receivers when people were offering stupid money for the parts kits. Cut, melted down or burned. With all the Ghost Gun BS it was easier and incredibly profitable.

If it wouldn't have fallen below the legal limit for barrel length, why not have a gunsmith cut the threaded portion off and recrown it?

FWIW, at least some of the factory threaded barrels are 16", but (as previously observed by @BULL'S-EYE ) it would be pretty simple to just remove the "assault weapon" barrel, and install a 'plain jane' factory barrel without a threaded muzzle. Maybe he was just doing it to make his wife happy (wouldn't be the first time ;^)!

With the ease of being able to swap barrels on a 10/22, it does make me wonder if this guy was a shill for the anti-gun crowd.

I live in NY and have draconian laws enacted here which are on par to Ct.
Most firearm owners here with now outlawed guns either temporary modified them to comply or moved them out of state to friends and family till we ESCAPE FROM NY or as a last resort sell them. To destroy one of them is just cutting off your nose to spite your face and just plain stupid.

The more I thought about this guy this is what I keep thinking. Perhaps a paid plant to say "hey I'm a gun owner and I'm complying so all of you should also".
I've experienced it when part of a very large organized hunting contest. PETA and The Humane Society planted persons posing as like minded "hunters" at a contest weigh-in/breakfast/awards event. They posted videos of themselves saying they were hunters but that they thought it was "unjust" and "cruel" to have a contest. They were later exposed as paid journalists doing "investigative reporting". It led to a lot of political BS, which led to the end of hunting contests with monetary and sponsored awards in Maryland...and MD is just as bad if not worse than CT.
Reverse Psychology. One of the elements of my profession is obtaining an "admission" of guilt. A lot of implied empathy and reverse psychology techniques go into that to gain the trust of the subject to the point they follow along to the point of admission.
Who's to say this guy was legit? How many folks do you know that would willingly destroy a firearm they worked for and paid cash for?

I had over 20 80% AR's that I built laying around and over a dozen Poly 80 frankenglocks that the grips only halfway worked for me that I didn't particularly like at all. People were begging me for the parts to build their own during the scares. I figured they would be better off distributed among other Patriotic Americans. They've funded several replacements among other things. I'm not exactly lacking and a few dozen 80% that I didn't have to pay to get them engraved to keep them 100% legal
