Been seeing a lot of rifles for sale in 270 and 30-06 calibers, I guess they wont kill anything any more we all have to have magnums or funny sounding calibers, can some one tell me why the old calibers aint any good any more.

Don't forget that many older .270 & -06 owners are now at an age where they're either not hunting any more, reducing their inventory prior to retirement, or simply scaling down on the rifles that have enough recoil to have a negative effect on them.
In my case, while I've owned/shot/hunted many heavy-recoiling rifles & shotguns, and retired a baker's dozen years ago, I no longer own 12ga shotguns or rifles over .30 cal - and even my .30's are on the .30-30 level, and not .308/ .30-06/ .300 magnum.

Besides the "ageing" factor, you have to remember the "pussification" of the up and coming generations that were not even allowed to bite their pop tarts into gun shapes. Oh we don't keep score---everyone is a winner and gets a ribbon or trophy.

My old Savage M99 in .308 would not impress any young man, but I liked it. I think the .308 Winchester is one of the best rounds yet to be devised. But, I think that about the .30-.30 too. I am a dinosaur, and I admit it.
Yep, old guns and old cartridges just can't kill. Now just what was that old Italian rifle the fellow in Dallas used.
I dunno, Pete. My 30.30s have steel or hard plastic butt plates, not recoil pads like my 30.06s. It had been quite a few years since I shot my lever guns. When I recently used one of my 30.30s to take out a couple of coyotes around the ranch I was abruptly reminded of the power. Not as comfortable as I remembered.pete44ru said:

Since about 1912, the main purpose of 'new' introductions in cartridges, has been to sell rifles. And then, of course, the main idea in new rifles is to sell cartridges. 8)

I saw the same thing back when all the SAUM, WSM and other such cartridges were introduced. A lot of hunters that I knew ran out and bought new rifles chambered for the new cartridges, and none of them could really explain to me why they 'needed' a new rifle. I think it was mostly a case of the 'hot running wants.'
Now you can't hardly find brass for any of the WSM cartridges, and I'm sure some of the others are in the same boat. You just have to remember that Remington, Ruger and Savage aren't making any money if the shooting public aren't buying new guns.

- Have to disagree with both points. But to the question I can opine that recoil is something I've come to dislike. Recoil for no other reason than nostalgia is even nuttier. I've sold off all but one 30-06 and two 270 Winchester rifles. Just for economics.
