Grips again...I am so confused!!!

Hello all…I am new to the forum, own an SR1911 that I think is the biggest bang for the buck in a 1911 and am awaiting delivery of a new GP100 3” fixed sight model. I used to own an SP101 that was a great CCW. I intend to use the GP100 for informal IDPA type of shoots at my club.

I do not care for the Hogue grips that will come with my new revolver and am in process of replacing the grips. I researched everything and decided on the old style rubber grip with inserts. Lots of good info, but some of it is contradictory and confusing. Ruger has the old grips for sale on the Ruger web site for $40, however, the Ruger rep told me that they will not fit the fixed sight 3" GP100. I was told that the grip frame is different. So, following advice on this and other forums I ordered the rubber grip for the 3" fixed sight model from Midway and the inserts from Altamont. Then I saw a pic of a real nice set of walnut grips on polseszczyk’s GP in a post here and thought that they would also be nice. Went to the grips4u site and there they were. G4U states that the grip will fit the regular GP100 as well as the 3” fixed sight model.

Now I am confused…..is there or is there not a difference between the two??? If there is, in fact, a difference what is it?? Some say yes, some say no & that includes Ruger.

I'm pretty sure the 3" fixed GP will accept all the grip options available to the other GP models as well as the super redhawk. I have had the full size lett grip, hogue monogrip, and the compact original grip on my 3".

57, thanks for your response.....it still puzzles me why Ruger tech support would tell me that the older rubber grip with inserts that they are selling on the Ruger site will not fit the 3" fixed sight model. I guess it will boil down to me actually trying the various grips that appeal to me.

Go to midway.com and order them, much cheaper and the same thing. The full size grips will work, and the compact grips will work also.

That rep is nuts. I have both the full size and small frame old style grips for my 3" GP100. They both work fine -- the only difference is in the grips themselves -- the shank on the gun is the same. The rubber is thicker and goes further down on the full size. I had to take a little metal off the "grip locator" for the Altamont inserts for the short-frame grips, but that was no biggie.

I like the short frame for carry, but the full size looks extremely cool.

That really is odd that the rep would say that. The wiley clapp 3" gp comes with the full size lett grips. Everyone has a brain fart day though.

I haven't compared the grip frames personally, so I can't make an accurate observation. To add to the confusion why would MidWay state that the grip I ordered is for a "GP100 3" fixed sight" .....????? I haven't spoken to MidWay....I think I will call them to see what they have to add to this confusion.

There were two sizes of rubber grips with wooden inserts, the larger one came on the adjustable sight version and the other smaller one came on the fixed sight version. The smaller grip is referred to as the fixed sight grips, the rep was probably looking at a computer screen that said for fixed sight model or for adjustable sight model and assumed (there's that word) that the two were not interchangeable.

The grip frame or stud on all GP-100's is exactly the same. Either rubber factory grip will fit any GP-100. There are also two sizes for the inserts, one for the large grip and one for the small.

I always put the smaller (fixed sight) grips on my GP-100's as they fit my hand perfectly. When they were discontinued I bought several sets so I'd always have them since I like them that much.

Tim, thanks...that is what I initially concluded and it makes a lot of sense. The confusion came from Ruger when I was told that the grip frames are actually different, when in fact, they are not.
