GP100 problem

Help from our experts needed please. I have a problem with my two month old GP100. When trying to close the cylinder with the gun empty I noticed it wouldn't fully close. I didn't force anything and tried depressing the crane latch and noticed that the crane latch was stuck and wouldn't move. Is this something that I can try to fix or does the gun need professional attention?

Are you slightly rotating the cylinder as you close it? You need to do that.

Are you slightly rotating the cylinder as you close it? Yes, I always do. It seems to me that the issue is due to the crane latch being jammed - it won't move as it normally does. Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for the link. I don't think I need parts but after reading the article I may have to disassemble the crane latch. What I don't know is whether this is something I should try myself or not, as life's lessons have taught me that things are generally very much easier to disassemble than to reassemble properly.

I've included a PDF from Ruger for the GP100.

Be sure the crane latch pivot - part KE27 - is screwed in all the way. Sometimes the little buggers begin to unscrew themselves, which is not a good thing. Use a gunsmith's or jeweler's teeny flat screwdriver.

The GP has two crane latches. One in the front and one in the back at the ejector. Many times crud can get under the ejector star and prevent the cylinder from closing. Check and clean under the ejector star. If the latch button is not working it could have debris in the works. The GP has major components that come apart for cleaning. Check the videos on the Ruger.com website. You can also flush the works with Gun Blaster or flush with a solvent like kerosene. Then oil. :D

Thanks so much for the suggestions. The crane latch that was stuck is the one you depress to unlock the cylinder to swing it open. The Ruger disassembly video doesn't address this component.

The culprit was that KE27 part which was loose. Moving the screw and working the latch I managed to get it to seat and then tightened the screw. It seems to be OK now. I did notice the screw but was afraid to fool with it before getting advice as I imagined spring loaded parts flying in every direction if I did the wrong thing :D

That latch tends to loosen up. I had to put loctite on screw a couple of times. Hope I'm on the same page your on.
