I cleaned the gun (bore, cylinder, wipedown) after a 200 round night at the range and then dry fired to verify function. During dry fire, I noticed my GP100 has an inconsistent double action trigger weight that wasn't there before.

Every 2nd or third pull, the weight is noticeably higher than normal.

Hammer cocking to fire in single action exhibits the same behavior. Cocking the hammer back every 2nd or third time requires noticeably more force.

Any ideas why this is happening?

you can check the main spring by just cocking the hammer (you`ll feel the strut draggin), probably the trigger spring binding from the trigger housing plunger not seating completely.

Remove the grips & whack the housing near the plunger end with a plastic hammer to seat it .

Also for more consistent weights shimmin is neccesary , I make my shims from a set of $7.00 feeler gages& a 45acp case.

Grease the trigger spring well , this is one of the places oil is just to lite & while it`s out ya can smooth the well with a 13/64 bit & lappin compound.

Thanks guys. I took the gun down and gave it a full cleaning and checked the mainspring and the trigger housing.

Trigger weight is more consistent but it now exhibits considerable stacking that I have not noticed before. I'll play with it some more and/or have someone local take a look at it.

Tam tap the trigger housing so the plunger will seat completely.

The stackin is common problem after installin a lighter trigger spring .Some times to the point of bindin the trigger where ya can`t work the action SAor DA !!

DO NOT LUBE THE PLUNGER!!! it will loosen under recoil when shootin magnum loads

Update

1) made sure the mainspring was seated properly. Seems like it the strut/spring is somewhat sensitive to how it is seated on in the frame. If not just right, it tends to bind.

2) made sure the trigger housing is seated fully. This, too, is a bit sensitive to how it is seated at the housing end.

Trigger stroke is now back to how it was out of the box - no crazy pull weight and stacking - perhaps a hair smoother now that it has close to 400 .327 Fed. Mag. and 100 .32 S&W Long through it.

Hammer cocking weight is also restored without crazing "stacking" halfway through the cocking stroke.

Thanks all!

I have a GP that was doing the exact same thing that yours was doing.

I sent it back to Ruger and when I got it back, the repair order said that they replaced the hammer???

I wondered about that as the gun had not been dropped or anything like that and not fired any loads that were super hot and the problem evolved over time and I had not disassembled it.

Anyway, they fixed it, whatever they did. 8)

Redhawk

Your DA sear was probably pitted or very rough with a void .

Seen 2 like that & could not do anything possible to fix it , now on a stackin trigger it`s 1 of the first things I look at when I break it open !!
