The ejector rod moves a little (1/8" or so) is this normal or is something in need of repair?

Nope its normal, mine does the same, the ejector rod tends to rattle as well as the transfer bar, hearing some noise from these two parts is a good thing, lets you know the gun is working! My ejector bar lays somewhat crooked within the under lug, but when needed to function straightens itself out no problem to be slammed on when ejecting shells. Does yours still performs its function? If so, you are good to go!

Still seems to work fine just thought it was falling off and maybe I needed to tighten something.

^Falling off, as literally out and off the gun? That is not normal. Check your manual for the exploded diagram and see if you need to tighten something, also check all metal to metal contacts in and around the ejector to see if anything is odd and out of shape. More people will come to your aid I am sure here.

Probably normal but I am new to guns. This is my first revolver.

It moves because there is room for the star to move toward the recoil plate. It probably won't, or not as much, with rounds in the gun.

No, the star part doesn't move just the tube part you can see in the picture. The rest of the plunger part stays put as it should.

Hope that clarifies.

I just checked mine. It has been our "house" gun since I bought it new in 1995.

When pushing on the ejector rod with the cylinder lying open:

Loaded - the ejecter rod immediately engages the cartridges/star extractor and they all start sliding out of the cylinder.

Empty - the ejector rod slides about 1/8" before the star extractor starts sliding out of the cylinder.

HTH.
