GP100 barrel off center?

I was wondering why I had to adjust my rear sight so far to the right. Then I noticed what you see in the photo below. The barrel is offset 0.048" closer to the right side of the frame than to the left.

My Redhawk has the same thing going on, but to a much lesser degree.
Is this normal for Rugers? None of my Smiths are like this.

Yup definitely a common issue with ruger's DA revolvers. There have already been several posts on the matter. My new Gp-100 has the exact same issue, didn't notice it till after I got done shooting! I don't think its much of an issue because my sights line up pretty good without adjustment and the revolver is pretty accurate for what it is. I would not worry about and just shoot it. I have never been a big fan of fit and finish on ruger DAs.

Give Ruger a call & request a pickup box , they`ll make it rite !!

All the GPs I`ve handled I look at what your cocerned about & look for barrel cantin , & the 1s with sites jacked to 1 side have cantin !

Hmmm. I've had my GP 100 since 1995. It, too, has the barrel slightly off center as in the photo above. Never noticed it before. Rear sights line up dead center on the frame, tho... , great shooter.

RH44, If you look down the bore, the firing pin hole appears to be in the center. The burn marks on the cylinder are evenly centered between holes and are in the expected locations. So I think the barrel is true to the cylinder. No bullet shaving, either.
The sight blade is offset to the right, but has not yet reached the edge of the slot. The adjustment screw for the sight blade does protrude out quite a bit.
I don't want to get carried away with concern, just trying to find out if this is common. Looks like it is.

andyo5, "cantin'" means canted; the barrel/front sight is too far right or left. Usually with a Ruger it's canted to the right meaning the average shooter will have to adjust the rear sight to the right, sometimes way to the right. I have a SA Colt that's canted to the right so far it's ridiculous.

I remember looking for a Security Six in the late 70's. Most I saw had front sights canted to the right so far I wouldn't buy them. I finally found a keeper. I have a few S&W's with sights right on the $. A rare old Smith I've been looking for also had the front sight canted to the right and I had to pass on it. After 10 years of looking I thought I'd found it :cry:

Here's what the rear sight looks like. It adjusted for 158g JHP reloads at approx. 1350 fps.
I looked again at my Redhawk, and it has pretty much the same situation with the exception that the sight adjustment screw does not protrude on the Redhawk like it does in this photo of the GP100.

The barrel just wasn't fully torqued, or reached the required torque before coming to center. The machinist should have removed the barrel, and ground just a hair more off the frame.......... but he was lazy that day. Simple cause, simple fix.

The barrel off set at the frame is the manufacturers way of havin a little play room in settin up toolin to "drop in" parts .

Once they`ve twick all the set up tolerances they make "productin" runs .

Anybody remember when all the GPs where sent back for a spittin problem ????

if you`ll do a search on rear sights you`ll probably find a bunch of threads on the subject .

barrel cant comes from under turnin or over turnin the barrel to center in the frame .The barrel has a torque value to be tightened in the frame & it was probably reached before the barrel reached dead center .

Some people notice rite off (as you did) & some people never see it ???

& best left to the factory to fix !

I had my gp100 and nm blackhawk sent back with the same problem. The windage screw was out about half way to bring the POI to the middle at 25 yards. They fixed the problem in 4 weeks. Now I only had to go a few clicks to sight it in.

My gp100 is exactly the same as yours, but the accuracy is amazing, so I don't really care.
