First off, I like to say hi. I'm new here but NOT to Ruger firearms. Now to my question...

What do y'all think are the chances of Ruger ever making a 5 shot gp100 in .45Colt or even ACP?

Welcome to the forum!

I think two chances. Or rather, somewhere between the two chances of "slim" and "none", unfortunately.

Personally, I'd absolutely love a 5 shot .44 Special GP, but that ain't happenin', neither. At least based on my crystal ball. As they say, "Anything is possible", but I'm not holding my breath. I went out and bought an older .44 Special S&W DA revo instead.

I consider it a bad omen that there are no well known gunsmiths out there doing this conversion, while there is at least one who will do a .41 (mag?) on a GP. If the .44 or .45 were "doable", someone would be doing it. And if they did enough of them maybe Ruger would catch on and make it a regular model. But none of that is happening.

We can dream, though.

Really about Zero. Dave Clements does a 10mm conversion. :D

Thanks y'all,

I reckon, I already knew the answer. Just needed to confirm it. Or was I just trying to get something started. What's the name of that place that Ruger does all those Special Runs for??? Maybe they could talk'em into it?

I have looked at the 4" Redhawk but they are still a might big for a CCW. I'd be better off carrying my 3.5" Birdshead Vaquero(which I have done). Seems to me the GP frame would be the perfect set-up for a concealable DA .45 wheelgun. But then again what do I know?

Thanks again,
C.S.

David Clements used to do a five-shot .44Spl that was perfectly safe for the 1200fps Keith load. Double actions are much more difficult to do heavy duty five-shot conversions on and he has since stopped doing a lot of stuff like that. Don't know if there would be enough meat for the .45Colt. Don't know of anybody who has tried and it certainly wouldn't be safe for any more than standard pressure loads so why not just get a spiffy N-frame?

HOW DARE YOU TALK TO ME LIKE THAT!!!!

Personally, the Ruger GP & SP lines are the only DA's that really appeal to me. All the rest are kinda ugly.

Reckon if it can't be done I'll just carry my 3.5" Birdshead Vaquero. Now that's a good looking revolver!

I'm all for just about any custom sixgun project you can imagine but I do have a practical side too. ;)

I would take a couple in .44spl.

really i would hit up lipsey or davidsons to put in an order for a run of .44/.45 rather than try with ruger. at least thats how the .44spl blackhawk came to be production run.

oh and welcome to the forum.

im still waiting for a .454 SBH convertable with a 45acp cylinder so i can shoot 454, 45colt, 45acp all in one revolver.

Move up to the 'modern double-action' and consider a Super Redhawk? :D

Redhawk & Super Redhawk, .44, .45LC, .454, .480,
*The .454 conversion can allow you to shoot .45acp, .45LC and .454 Casull in a single conversion.

Well, I sent Clement's an e-mail last night and got a reply first thing this morning. David said the .45 cal. is just too big for the GP. So I reckon it's back to the Vaquero.

He didn't say. But there is a pic of one on his website and the caption says these are not available. So I guess that's a... "NO!"

I figured as much. I know he posted a couple years ago that he was suspending his double action work. One other bummer with the GP is that to have any true custom stocks made, you have to ship the gun to the maker. I was gonna send my Super Redhawk (same grip) to Herrett's for a set of Ropers but what would've been a $130 stock for a S&W would've been well over $300 with shipping and fitting.

Dave Clements (per his site) does some Ruger DA work:

http://www.clementscustomguns.com/rugerdarevolvers.html

but, as mentioned, no .44 Sp GP-100. One, perhaps, could convince Bowen to do it.

I had a 5 shot 44 Special Speed Six or Security Six in my hand by Alpha Precision at a gunshow. $500 and it looked unfired. Didn't know what I was holding and passed

You sure it was Alpha Precision? I wasn't aware that Jim Stroh built custom cylinders for double actions at any time. I know he doesn't do it now. I can't recollect the name of the gunsmith that was doing a bunch of these back in the `80's. Devel???

I certainly think Ruger is leaving some money on the table if they don't make a little bigger framed LCR in .44spl and .45acp.

Smith & Wesson is asking a fortune for there "Night-Guards"... but they're really built with all the right bells and whistles.

A five shot 3 inch GP-100 chambered in 44 Special or 45 Colt...there's a gun I'd buy in a heart beat.

Yeah'... Ruger's missing something like this in there line-up!

Actually, I'd like to see a "GP-100 44spl" and a "GP-100 45acp"... the colt offering would be OK' but I carry my 45LC-Redhawk just fine with a Simply-Rugged pancake.

Oh c'mon now. Of course it's doable.
I'm told quite often that the GP is every bit as strong as an N frame Smith.

But seriously... why a .44 GP when we already have one o' THESE?

I got my GP100 .357 out and measured the thickness of the steel between the chamber and the outside of the cylinder...it is about .085"

The 45 LC cartridge is nominally about .100" larger in diameter than a .357 Mg., so that means that the GP Cylinder AS IS would have .030" of steel from the outside of the cylinder to the chamber.

I do not think it would be safe to shoot loads in any .45 GP that were at all hot.

Now, in looking at the cylinder and understanding that every .010" counts in a situation like this, I THINK a larger diameter cylinder could be fitted to the frame of the GP and perhaps get that thickness up to somewhere in the neighborhood of .050" which would be better, but even then, none too much as far as strength goes.

As a side note, the smallest 44 Special that I have is a Rossi 720 3" which has a frame a lot like the K frame Smith (sizewise) and the wall thickness is around .052" and I have shot SOME loads of 17.5 gr. 2400 and a 240 grain Remington bullet that chronographed at 1000+fps.....

I figured I was lucky not to blow it up in that case.

I really DO think the GP would make a decent .44 Sp and if they ever make them, I will buy one, but the 45 LC, while POSSIBLE is too close to the line for me .... 8)

I also think that it would make a good .10MM auto set up for moon clips, I would buy one of those too, if offered.

Being practical, a 41mag, 40S&W or 10mm is do-able but wouldn't make them any money.

I would say Ruger has it covered with the Redhawk 4" in .45Colt. :D :D

I remember when one of our members got one of the prototypes by accident.

Other factors you have to consider is the spacing between the centerline of the cylinder and the centerline of the chamber. I really think that if the .45Colt were possible in the GP, even at standard loadings, Clements would've offered it and we probably would've seen something similar from Bowen by now.

Thanks y'all,

These have been some very enlightrning posts. I don't currently own nor have I ever owned a GP. I have handled a couple at shows and they feel really good in my hand. That's why I askedabout it. I have never handled a Smith that I really cared for and I don't know anything about them.

I have looked at the 4" .45 Redhawk's online but have yet to actually handle one. If their grips are as large as the grips on a Blackhawk
(and I assume they are) then I probably won't like it either.

Thanks again for all the great info,
C.S.

I'll say it again. sure would like a GP100 in 10mm and i think its done in a six shot. would have to see one again to be sure.
And a BH, and a Vaquero. all to be buddies with a glock 20. with them being onpar with the energy of a standard 44spl or 45colt i think they would make great field and urban guns.

That is what I opted for and it is about as much gun as I want to handle in a carryable sidearm. 255 grain cast bullets at 1000 fps are quite pleasant and even at a good honest 1200 fps it is managable.

I am able to keep 6 shots on a paper plate fireing double action rapid fire at 50 feet, so it fills the bill for me as a potential defense gun against black bears and hogs and mountain lions. As to grizzlys, I really don't think any handgun is GOOD protection, but I suppose it would be better than trying to find a tree to climb.... 8)

I'm very positive on the 10mm and .400 calibers in general (love the .38-40) but I just don't wanna have to fool with moon clips. Which is why I think the .41Spl would be more interesting and useful and would be more than open about Ruger resurrecting the .401PowerMag and stuffing it into the GP. Maybe I'm goofy but I'd rather reload a wildcat with a rim on it than mess with moonclips.
