It really, really hurts. Been some time since I had it but I guess a combination of dehydration, too much sausage, spinach, and a bag of M&Ms, with a slight injury from stepping off a 2' high curb got me a flare up. I can hardly hobble to the bathroom using a cane.

Being crippled up has increased my posting rate here, though. Thank you all for your forbearance .

Stay away from shellfish, asparagus, herring, etc. If it taste`s good spit it out. One thing that is worse than gout is kidney stones and gout is the precursor to kidney stones. If you can get your son`s buddy to score some Vicodin keep it on hand for kidney stones later. Good luck.

I have pain from something, I ain't sure what it is, but man, it hurts sometimes. So even though I don't feel your pain, I commiserate and sympathize with you. I can't get out of bed on some days, because I lock up with pain.

I buy consentrated tart cherry juice. Mix it with water and drink it after work. Seems to keep the gout at Bay, along with the other recommendations.

Good luck.

I feel your pain.........................

I never had gout, but had kidney stones 22 years ago - and was fortunate enough to catch a large stone (about the size of a split pea) in the strainer I was using at the time.

An analysis show that my kidney stones were from excess uric acid (calcium stones being the other kind of kidney stones), and the meds I was given was Allopurinal - a gout relief medication I take daily, even today. (go figure)

Vaya 'con Dios, pardner..... :)

Get steel toed shoes four sizes too big. I had gout the night I got married and the wife was on a walker. It was a rough start. She had to build sort of a tent over my feet in bed as the weight of the sheet on the toes was bad. I also was told to use Allopurinol but another doctor also told me it actually can bring on the gout sometimes. Since I had my first case of it about in 1982, I bet I have had it about 15 % of the time but not in the last four months or so. I have also had numerous kidney stones and they make the gout feel good if you have both at the same time.
They tell me I should drink more water but they would have me drink about four gallons a day. I don't. I have to get up four times a night already.

I wouldn't recommend posting anything illegal on the forum here. Any misuse or disuse of prescription medication is not legal. That includes taking medications not prescribed to you, or giving medications to someone they are not prescribed to. There is a drug epidemic in the US for many of those reasons.

It is said that: "Gout occurs more commonly in those who regularly eat meat or seafood, drink beer, or are overweight." I have bouts of it (right foot only) and I am only two out of four on the causes. I don't drink and I am anything BUT overweight. I do like my meat and taters though

I guess many people dont understand us old guys sense of humor. My wife has had the flu for two months. I took her to the doctor this morning. She took along a bag of medicine that was outdated and asked him to dispose it. I busted in with, Hey! I could have taken it to the corner of the school and just stood there! That cracked him up! But we understand each other we both hunt, like guns, were airplane owners etc.
He lets his dog run from room to room to greet the patents, has mounted deer, cougar, a Mountain Goat head on some walls and we both are old Harley riders.
We arent too PC here in cowboy, Indian and polygamist country. I still am loose for 77 years now. I will be damned if I turn PC at this late date of my life. Thanks anyway.

I had kidney stones about 40 years ago and thank God never again since then. I usually try hard to drink plenty of water but the older I get the less I feel the sensation of thirst.

Thanks, everyone, for the good wishes.

I am a big fat guy. Used to be even bigger and fatter. Once over #300 lbs and 6ft 2"s.
Starting out my working life I only knew very hard dirty work and ate like a horse. From that to a pretty much non physical job, (guard) and got inactive. It caught up to me with age. Now retired and inactive I have no apatite. I still stay fat, about 265.
Gout hit me about 1980 and kidney stones a couple years later. I have been plagued with both since. Last summer I got hit with stones and was in ER several times and finally had them removed the hard way. Speaking of Vicodin, one doctor used to have me carry them for stones years ago. Now I think they wont prescribe them.

Gout is nothing to joke about. About 18 months ago I woke up in the middle of the night with severe pain and swelling at the base of my big toe on my left foot. The pain was intense, and even with a cane (I'm glad I saved one from when I had knee replacements 10 years ago) walking was really difficult. I was unable to see my doctor for over a week, and while the symptoms eased up after about 4 days I was still hurting. Then about two weeks later I again suffered an attack, which was even worse. For me, taking colcrys right away really helped, but I started getting gout attacks about every other week. Over time my doctor kept increasing the prescription so that now I take 400mg of allupurinol and 1 colcrys tablet every morning. I've been doing this for over a year now and have not had another attack. Everyone is different, but most people (I am told) can control the gout with the right level of medication. Now my uric acid is well into the low normal range and I eat anything I feel like eating without a problem. I even have gone back to having an occasional shot of Jack Daniels, something I had stopped doing for awhile since I was advised that alcohol can trigger an attack. I recommend that no one just try to suffer through gout, which is really terrible to have, since there are meds that can fully control this condition.

Had an issue once that was sort of a precursor to gout. Talked to a Doc. He said drink more water. I drink lots of water and haven't had any issues since. You may have to urinate more frequently, but compared to suffering with gout it's a small price to pay.

Absolute TRUTH!

I tried the tart cherry juice, but got upset with $6.50 for a quart.
Tried Orange Juice, and it does almost as good, but costs a LOT less.
If you do the OJ thing, do . . . not . . . use frozen. There is something
in the freezing process that reduces the effectiveness.

The single worst thing to aggravate gout, is beer (SIGH!).

Each time you use the piddle pot, have a glass of water. Second thing
is to watch the color of what you leave behind. The darker it is, the more
water you NEED.

Been there and did all of the above.
Water is the easiest, most effective, AND least expensive.

:D

Last time I dealt with it I was out deer hunting about 1 1/2 mile from where I parked the truck and sitting 12' up in a treestand. Kidney stone went bad and gout kicked in while I was climbing down out of the tree. I was about crying in pain by the time I hiked back to the truck and then trying to push the gas pedal down on the way home or picking up my leg to hit the brake was excruciating. I finally passed a stone the size of a .25 auto case. Never again, I drink lots of lemonade, cherry and cranberry juices, watch my red meat and shellfish consumption, and pray it don't happen in way back country elk hunting

Ain't it funny how the things natured intended them to be seems to be what we need.

My first stone I drove myself to the doctor. I was sitting in agony in the waiting room and noticed in sort of a fog a blond woman watching me. A few days later our department secretary asked me what I was doing at the doctors. I hadn't recognized the woman as our secretary! Last year I got a stone driving our RZR on a trail back in and 80 miles from home. My wife was driving me and I am not a good passenger even when things are going good but I was a wreck and telling her how to drive. I shook her up and we hit someone about a block from the hospital! That was a bad expensive day!

I'm not sure it's the "intended" things that are sooo good for us,
but more like the UNintended things that taste sooo good, are
soooooooo bad for us.

About five years ago I was having gout attacks on a regular bases. I was stuck in a very stressful job that kept me tore up all the time. I finally had enough and my wife told me to quit. Everything is payed for and she said she could handle the bills. I ended up quitting that job and have been semi retired since then. Not one gout attack since. Stress really has a lot to do with gout in my case anyway.

+1 for water. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

I used to have flare-ups every year and a half or so but I make sure to down a lot of water every day and I haven't had a flare in a while.

Well, NOT gout, but yesterday both my knees hurt and I could hardly walk, or get into or out of the car. Then sitting at my computer I discovered the little bottle cap I put my Meloxicam Arthritis still had the pill that should have been taken the day before. OUCH I had forgot how bad my knees could ache.

I keep Hydrocodone on hand for Kidney Stones. I've had them 4 times and I just don't want to be away somewhere when one strikes. They are miserable. They Hydrocodone (which I NEVER use other wise) will help to get you to the point when you can get to a doctor.

Up to this point in my life I haven't had gout. I certainly hope I never do. I have a friend that's had it a couple of times and he's literally miserable.
