Diagnosed with gout just this month.
I took an afternoon nap, and woke up with a dead left arm, and left leg was in business for itself.

It only took them a month to decide it was gout, and I've been in pain ever since. Pick a joint, any joint, as long as it's not in a foot. I always thought it was just in the feet, but apparently not. It can affect any joint in the body. It's weakness, and pain in both shoulders, and arms, so much so I haven't been able to hold a gun, or go hunting.

The best part is, THIS is the first time I've ever had anything like it. It sucks.

Anyone else?

Take a pinch of baking soda (Arm & Hammer) in a small glass of warm water. Drink that once a day and your gout will disappear.
High uric acid causes gout. You need to make yourself alkaline. Raise your pH levels

TART cherry juice is the most effective. Naturally it tastes worse than regular cherry juice. Drink plenty of water, too.
Avoid pork, organ meats (including sausage and most lunchmeats), shellfish, high fructose corn syrup, alcoholic beverages (especially beer).

You just eliminated the American diet. 😂

Once you get the uric acid level down ask your Dr about Alpurinol.

Everyone wants some sort of non prescription miracle cure when an honest to god Miracle cure is available for about $5 a month. Took me 3 years and a lot of debilitating pain to figure out iced tea was my trigger, yes, iced tea.

Had the sore toe, then at some point it moved to my wrist. That was when Dr explained that Mr Gout is an equal opportunity joint destroyer, as you’ve figured out as well.

Get a dose of endomethecin (?) to get the inflammation and pain cleared up. It’s rather harsh so you don’t want to start relying on it, the Alpurinol is pretty benign as far as maintenance drugs go.

My buddy has gout and hes in his 40s.

Tried all the home remedy crap, finally went to the Dr and now takes allpurinol.

Wishes he just would have done that first.

I had gout attacks back in the 90's. Worse pain I ever had.
As stated it is caused by too much uric acid in the blood which crystalizes when it reaches a cooler part of the body; usually a joint in an extremity. For me it was in the right big toe.
Alpurinol, is a general anti-inflammatory drug and not gout specific. Thank goodness it's benign and fairly cheap.

All good advice.
When I feel the toe starting to hurt in the early stages of gout in the morning, I take a Naproxin tablet right away then one in the evening and that stops it.
Of course keep well hydrated.

I’ve got it in my right foot and specifically in my big toe and ‘arfmel’ w
Is dead on. Drink dark cherry juice, couple of times a day, take any red meat off of your diet forever except that I cheat and have it ever so often. That is some excruciating pain where I can’t even put any weight on my foot and it’s taking me completely out of service several times in the last couple of years. Allopurinol as a prescription drug and I’m on it once a day I guess from now on. Get used to chicken and fish as your main source of protein and avoid any red meat, including pork. Drinking plenty of water also helps. Hopefully you can stick to a diet that will help reduce the gout attacks.

I eat a lot less red meat and for sure a lot less processed meat since my trifecta of health improvements in September (no more smoking, drinking, fast food) and I am overall better hydrated. I still have big toe pain but I am convinced it's turf toe from golf. I never was brown liquor guy (which is way worse for gout than clear) but quitting bad habits has made me feel better overall and saved a ton of money (over $1K per month).

I agree on the cherry juice.
Several years back, I visited an Amish farm and was invited inside by the Mrs. (fairly strange for that to happen) to find the Mr. sitting in a chair with his right leg propped up. I knew the old guy somewhat but was surprised when he asked my opinion on his ailment and then pulled the cover off his right foot. Yupper, he had a blazing onset of gout. I 'prescribed' cherry juice and when they didn't have any, I went to town and bought him a gallon of unsweetened juice. A week later I went by and found him in the barn cleaning out horse stalls.

Cherry juice seems to help me.

Another vote for this. I cannot say there is anything that would prove this, but here are 3 things that I will attest to as fact.

1.) I went through a 5 year period where I had regular bouts in my feet and one knee. I have never (yet) experienced anything that caused me as much acute pain. The doc finally gave me a medication that did keep it at bay but it jacked my BP up so high I had to get off it. After dropping it, the bouts came right back.

2.). Somewhere I heard about the cherry juice thing and something about the pigmentation that gives it the red color. I started looking for a source for non-concentrate red cherry juice by the gallon.

3.). I started drinking one 12-16 ounce glass of that juice every day. I started that in 2012. I have had ZERO gout bouts since I started doing that.

Those 3 things are absolute fact. Why or how does it work, and can I absolutely say that the juice is the cure? No. But I will ^$&% sure keep drinking it EVERY day.

Avoid all processed carbs like bread, cereal, pasta etc and anything with sugar. Eat proteins, eggs and vegetables. Exercise.

One of the more common side effect of allpurinol is

  • Ankle, knee, or great toe joint pain
  • joint stiffness or swelling
So the treatment give you the symptom. This is why I avoid BigPharma. YMMV

I woke up one night with severe pain in my big toe. I could hardly walk and needed a cane to try to ease the pressure on that joint. It took over a week to subside. About two weeks later it happened again, but even more severe. I was diagnosed as having gout and started on alpurinol which I have been taking daily ever since. I have not had any side effects of the drug, as far as I can determine, and in the almost ten years that I have been taking it, I have not had any problems with gout. I also keep on hand a drug called colchicine to be taken immediately for an attack, but I have not had to use that drug for the same ten years. Talk to your doctor, gout is a manageable condition related to arthritis.

That's what I keep reading.
Did they stick you on meds of some kind?
Nope, just stay hydrated. Makes you pee a lot. Then the uric acid doesn't build up in your system. I honestly think some folks avoid drinking water because they don't want to be inconvenienced by having to urinate more frequently.

Most folks, especially older ones don't drink enough water. I think ( my opinion only) older folks have their thirst impulse weaken as we age.

I had a couple of coworkers who suffered from gout. One is now in his mid 70's and walks with a cane. The other was a perfect picture of health. His upper arms we as big as my thighs. Sadly he developed severe complications related to gout and is no longer with us having passed away in his late 40s. I wish you the best with your treatment and definitely do everything you can to stay healthy.

My in-laws entertain a LOT and there is always a keg in the fridge downstairs with a tap on the door (which would be way too easy for me BTW).

When my BIL came down with stabbing/burning pain in several toes ("like broken glass in both feet") the doc diagnosed gout and warned him off of beer.

He switched to red wine (a glass or two with dinner most nights) and it went away. Lots of water too.

I took the 90 day carnivore diet challenge and ended up staying on it. Gout and arthritis went away. Veggies have toxic self protection that causes inflammation in humans and carbs keep you unhealthy. I lost 45 lbs and forgot all about gout until I read this post.

Gout can hit harder than most people think. I’ve had a few flareups myself, once it spreads beyond the foot, it’s brutal. Stay hydrated, watch the diet, and if you’re not on meds like allopurinol or colchicine yet, they can really help.
