Gawdy Knife

Many moons ago someone in the family -- now kindly forgotten -- gifted me -- re-gifted?-- an artfully done presentation knife replete with more chrome than a 58 Buick, brightly colored reproductions of rainbow trout and an eagle, and no surface left undecorated. Hunting knife size but obviously not intended for doing the dressing honors on a downed deer. It has had a place of honor at the back of a drawer for decades and is NIB.

Before I inflict it on some other unsuspecting frenemy, the thought arises.

Do folks actually collect such things? Is there any value to it?

I'd post picts but fear the guffaws would drown out any serious responses.

Might end up being light the Rinestone Fish lamp my family passed around every Christmas for years....

There are people that collect knives. This is one table from a "gathering" a few years ago.

That table is from cruzerlou's collection of his knives.

Some folks collect knives,, but like us Ruger gun collectors,,, most have a specific type we collect.

My daughter has gifted me those same type knives for Christmas and birthdays years ago. Same story, never used and sit in the safe. Must have a half dozen or more. Think most are made in China.

I actually dug it out of the drawer for the first time in years and found--- wait for it....

-- It's a 'limited edition' Franklin Mint folder knife made in China in 96-97

-- it is named 'THE OFFICIAL RAINBOW TROUT COLLECTOR KNIFE"..

-- It has 'scrimshaw (plastic) artwork of rainbow trout with 24 karat gold 'embellishments' on one side; a Franklin Mint emblem on the other; and a stainless blade. (No eagle -- that was my memory laying tricks again.)

-- Authorized by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation with a letter of certification.

Checking it out on the inet I found two conflicting hits re value. One auction of the same knife showed the last highest bid going for @ $118.00. Several others had NIB knives of the same type -- possibly copies?-- offered for @ $30.00! Go figure!

Franklin Mint has the propensity of issuing "collector's series" stuff, knives, gun replicas, carousel horses, anything that they think will sell.

When I was in my later teens, Dad bought me for my birthday a plastic handled deer motif sheath knife, about 8" chromed blade. He was awful proud of the knife he found for me (I was a very avid hunter at 16, he enjoyed it, but not seriously). Even at that age I knew it was junk, and tactfully hid it away until he was around if I was packing for hunting, to be sure he saw I had it out...
I still feel guilty about selling it at a garage sale first chance I had when he wasn't around. What I cant figure is why he would have bought it, when I had a very nice Western brand bone handled sheath knife that was very appropriate for most hunting chores (that he also bought me).

Generally speaking, anything manufactured and sold as a "collectable"---isn't. Even Winchester 94's.

While I don't consciously collect knives, I seem to find them all over the place here.....Some Kershaw, some Cold Steel, Case, Schrade, a little stainless steel no name from China I bought in Carrabelle, Florida, Some Gerbers..... and others......

We don't collect knives but we sure have accumulated a lot, mainly folders and in a variety of brands!

Please don't judge me. I have loved Victorinox Swiss Army knives since age 11 when I received my first from my Daddy. We had pocket knives of course as many will remember. I still debate sometimes adding to the half dozen I proudly own now. Something about stainless steel and red scales..... I understand knife collectors. Don.
