GASP! - (computer backup)

Did you ever have one of . . those . . days? Well it's been more like a week that
way around here. - - I decided to do a backup on my main computer (yawn), but
I decided to upgrade the laptop I put the backups on. I knew it was down level
so I just started the backup. About 75% done and the operating system says
"HEY! There is a later version! Do you want to start that upgrade?
I did the right thing and said no. - - So far, so good.

Completed the upgrade and didn't reboot (BIG mistake). Took a good half hour
to fix that. Did the second upgrade and then it would do NOTHING. Would not let
you do any thing, even shut down. - - Slam dunked the system (pulled the power
cable AND the battery). Put the battery back in, booted it up and everything is fine.
SIGH!

Ran my backup and (here is where the GASP comes it) according to the file where
I put the last backup date, I did the last one LAST AUGUST!

Well I have the final copy running now and have had to clean out a few files (that
I didn't use anyway). Main point is . . . How long has it been since you last
ran a backup? - - - I suggest you don't follow my last one. :roll:

I backup once a month normally, after cleaning out trash, browser history, unwanted cookies, etc. . Also after any signficant program/OS update.

Back up! Whats that? Never ever did backup matter of fact I'm not sure what the heck it is or how to go about it or actually how to initiate it. My computer does browsing
and stores pictures that is about it! No finances or anything like that. ps

My 3 systems, desktop, laptop, desktop, back up at 9:20 a.m. every Saturday, Sunday and Monday, respectively.

Two laptops and desktop automatically back up every Sunday.

I used to do "back-ups" weekly on my work computer. The discs were kept for 2 fiscal quarters and then re-used. I'm sure I'll get bitten sooner or later, but I haven't done any back up stuff on this desktop. I don't keep records or that sort of thing on this one.

With how cheap hard drives have gotten I think we have double if not triple back ups of everything here and with the Time Machine backup feature both of our main computers him a Mac Mini and me a Macbook Pro both of those get backed up every weekend. We also have a Windows PC around just in case ours have issues.

It is a very good thing to do backups of your computer data, but depending on how important it is then you can stretch it out to monthly or quarterly.

NOW how many have ever tried to do a restore from the backup? In my working days I knew of folks (companies) that did regular backups, but when they tried to do a restore, found out they could NOT. You never know a system until you Fully test it.

Good point. That's one of the reasons I use a straight copy. That way, no matter
what system you are on, you have your data, AND it's in a form that does not
require access to specific software to retrieve it.

Running Linux, my data takes far less than one micro SD card (32G) to hold all
of it. On my "main" computer I am all the way up to almost 3% of the 1T hd, after
over ten years. - - Doing the copy, it takes about twenty minutes to do the back up
AND the copy on to the laptop (that includes the 1,700 files for my web page).

A good Micro SD card supports data transfer rates well above 15 Meg Bytes
per second.

I store very little on my computer that can slow it down. I keep a Lexar Professional 1000x 64GB SDXC UHS-II memory card in my lap top and everything goes onto it. Then every few weeks I'll download whats on the memory card onto a flash drive just in case so I'll have a backup to my backup. Only thing I keep in my computer is some basic stuff that takes up very little room.

The Lexar memory card is still not full after over 2 years of down loading onto it. It has every picture I've taken over the past 4 years on it and all the files from my last lap top including the one I have now are on it. And as I said all these are also backed up on a flash drive.
