OK, I am a complete computer idiot. That said, I am using an HP laptop with Windows 10 on it. A couple of days ago I noticed that the time posted on the bottom menu strip was off by exactly 2 hours. I tried to click on the time to see if I could reset it or if it had somehow changed the time zone. Nothing happened, wouldn't come up. Since then, it has changed several times, now it is off by only 15 minutes, but I still can't change it. Then I was on a site and tried to minimize the screen so I could go back to the first one I had up, instead of minimizing, it disappeared. So now I am going on all the items on the bottom menu, and none of them work. I can't even get the icon in the lower left, the one that allows you to turn off or reset the computer to work. Nothing on that lower menu works. Any ideas? How did I screw this up?

sometimes when my laptop is acting weird it is because the windows updates haven't installed. you can click on the windows icon on the bottom go to settings, then updates and see if you are current
good luck

OK, I couldn't shut it down because the icon didn't work on the lower task bar. Wifey reminded me I could reboot by control alt delete, and it worked. Everything works again and the time is correct, etc. I guess it just needed to reboot. Dern computers.
If all else fails, just unplug it. Then it will turn off for sure.

You probably didn't screw anything up. Sometimes things just don't load as they should. A reboot is usually all that is needed.

Should turn it off when not in use it will save you alot of trouble down the road.
Puters do periodic upgrades. Be sure to set them to do automatically.

Turn it off at night. Save energy.

When I get up in the morning I turn it on, then go have coffee and read the paper. When I come back it has done all the stuff, plus the anti-virus thing has done its scanning. If an upgrade was needed it did it while I was absent.

In contrast, the wife's computer is used sparsely. She complains that when she turns it on nothin will work. SURE, it's doing all the downloading a virus stuff that had not been done over the last 2 weeks.

Use it every day and turn off at night and all will be well.

Unplugging a laptop does not do anything to the system. You have to use the power 'on/off' button, or wait for the battery to discharge completely before it turns off.

Yes, my bad. I was thinking of a desktop. If I had a laptop that would not respond like the OP's would remove the battery as well.

The t-mob could neither explain, nor fix, my phone, and sometimes tablet, thinking i am in lodi, when none of them have ever been there. For a while, it kept thinking i was in wyisconsin, but while i actually did drivevthru there a few times about then, i never lived there nor spent longer than a 10 hour reset, not even a 34. That went away after a while. Back to lodi. This year i got a moritolla and it hasent had that problem, but for 10 years my kyoceras diid.
Compyooters is craazy. I took coding my freshman highschool year, but quit cos i couldnt hack it.

Thanks for your response. But with laptops for the past 5 years or so you cannot remove the battery either, which means that you cannot replace them either! This is simply greed from the laptop manufacturers to force you to buy a new laptop when the battery gives out. I have one such laptop, and I keep it plugged in all the time, and once I unplug it from the AC, it shuts down! But it still works, so I have kept it.
