Today was our Senior Saints lunch at my church, and the theme was Round-Up and attendees were asked to dress western, or as our preacher announced, "Dress like Bob Wright." Anyway, there was one newcomer there, a new member but a long way into Senior Sainthood. While Nita and I were getting ready, I kept singing bits of "The Old Chisholm Trail."

At church, I made a little talk with the newcomer, and related this story, which he thought was nothing short of hilarious:

"There reportedly were one hundred and seven verses to the song The Old Chisholm Trail and supposedly only one man knew all one hundred and seven. At the opera house in either Cheyenne or Laramie Wyoming, he was to give a concert in which he would sing all hundred and seven verses. On the night of his performance, about the fifteenth verse or so, most in the audience having lost count, a cowboy stood and shot the performer dead. This tended to end the performance. The city marshal arrested the cowboy, and the following morning was brought before the judge, who had happened to be in the crowd the previous night. The judge heard the charges against the cowboy, and without further ado ruled the case "Honorable homicide." Case closed."

Here is another old time western story about a for hire killer and a farmer. The farmer saw the gunman approaching on horseback so the farmer stepped out on his front porch and levered a round into the chamber of his Winchester. Seeing this, the bad guy raised his 6 shooter and commenced firing. Unscratched, the farmer proceeded to put a .44 slug into center mass of the cowboy thus ending his career.

At the inquest, the coroner ruled the death a suicide, as the two men were about 100 yards apart.

The moral being: don't take a pistol to a rifle gun fight.

p.s., This reminds me of all the cop tv shows were the cop pulls out his Glock and takes on half a dozen bad guys armed with rifles and machine guns and the cop always wins.
