Funny how a seemingly inconsequential event can stick with you for decades. Back when I was doing a fair bit of business travel for Boeing in the late '80's & early 90's, I recall one flight in particular. I'd brought a fresh apple on board with me that I planned on eating during the flight on a 737. Heading back East from Seattle, but don't recall why. Anyway, I had a aisle seat in Business class. About halfway thru the flight I dug the apple out and started cutting off bite size pieces with a small pocket knife that I always carried. Right across the aisle was a young boy (looked about 6 or 7yo) in the aisle seat, with his mother dozing in the window seat next to him. I noticed he was watching me intently as I cut off pieces, so I cut off a piece and stuck it on the point of the knife and held it out to him. Not a word was said. He took the piece, smiled a little, popped it in his mouth and looked content. I guess he'd never seen anyone eat an apple that way. Mom never even knew about it, so it was our little secret.
:)

Sometimes I wonder how his life has turned out.

I was thinking the opposite that he had seen someone eat an apple like that, and usually got a piece.

It would be interesting to see how he grew up.

Thanks for the nice story.

My Dad always ate an apple like that. I always thought it was the way a real man ate an apple.

One day he saw me take a bite out of an apple and he said “I wish I could eat them like that!” Lol.

He cut them up because of his dentures.

Of course nowadays I'm not sure you could even carry the apple on to the flight and if you did you'd have to gnaw on it like a rodent.
Feed someone else's kid, they'd probably want you arrested.
Our world has not improved.
I got to go flying with my uncle in singles and light twins when I was in my single digits, he was an WWII P51 pilot and would take my dad and I flying fairly often. I remember my first commercial flight was on an Eastern Airlines 707 to Florida. I asked and got to go up and stand in the cockpit for a while.
Every time we flew somewhere I'd always ask, lotta buttons and switches for a 10 year old.

I have not thought of slicing off pieces of an apple with my pocket knife in a long time. Thanks for jiggling my memory.

And, yeah, I've tried to peel apples, oranges, and potatoes leaving just one long strip of peeling.

Little events in our lives often make us smile & wonder. And yes,, times sure have changed. Can't carry a knife on a plane anymore, (thanks to terrorists,) can't give kids anything from a stranger, (thanks to child predators,) and do many things that used to be common.
But a simple little good thing like sharing, or making a kid smile is priceless.
