First range trip since the pandemic.....

This morning I decided to go to the range. Last time was early February. Since then I have wanted to sight in a couple of woods defense/hunting handguns. Not Rugers, but a S&W 629 Classic with a 5" barrel and a Sig P220 10mm. When hiking in the woods or as a hunting companion, one or the other will be my companion.

Both were shot off sandbags @ 50 yds. After zeroing, these were my best 3 shot groups from both platforms.

First was the 629

I am very happy with the result and know they will do their job if I do mine!

I've tried my gun club three times last week before I showed up and the pistol range was empty.... I've been spoiled, up until this pandemonium set in I could go during the week, morning or afternoon and usually no one was there... now every morning there are 3-5 old white guys shooting*... Thursday it was clear and I had gotten a notice from FN that they were dong some kind of social network contest on 5-7 and to use the hashtag #FNFiveseveNDay... I think 5-7 is actually one of their pistols, not sure.... to make this an even longer story... Last April I bought a pistol from Colonial Girl.... it was an FN... specially their FNS-9.... I have only shot it once before this past Thursday... but I down loaded FN's targets and decided to give it a try..... I did okay at 25ft and then decided to try the bigger target at 50ft... which for me is a stretch shooting standing using two hands (of course) ... well, at least for me, when I walked down to retrieve the 50ft target my first reaction was ... damn!

I think a 2.25" group at 50 feet with a semi-auto pistol shooting standing is pretty good... at least it is for me.
*the comment about the old white guys is a joke on me since I'm one too....

Glad y'all were able to get to a range, shoot & enjoy yourselves. Doing something just for fun is great therapy. And it appears y'all haven't forgotten how to shoot either.

Me? I'm spoiled,, I own a range,,,,! (Yes,,, I'm rubbing it in a LITTLE!)

Wow! Some of the best 50 yd. pistol shooting I've seen. Your eyes must be great or you've got a pair of specs that are perfect.

And, two great looking guns as well. They need a .22 to go with them to make a set, but it would take something pretty doggone nice to hang with those.

This IS the best I have shot at 50 yds with a handgun in many years. I was shooting off sandbags with barrel supported with the 629. This particular revolver has a great trigger which helps too.
Good eyes? Hardly.... I wear progressive lens trifocals. Yesterday, I focused on having a good clear sight picture with the target itself being a little fuzzy.
After attaining the best sight picture I could and maintaining it I just had constant progressive trigger pressure. When the gun fired it was a surprise.
Ammo used was Hornady 240gr JHP XTP factory stuff.

With the Sig, it was pretty much the same technique. The Sig has no where near as good a trigger as the 629. Ammo was Minuteman 180 gr XTP hollow points.

Yes, it was a perfect day..... probably never to be duplicated by me.

A "range" might be a bit of a stretch for me. I have a bench and a backstop with portable swinger supports scattered between. At any rate, I have all the "pew-pew" 22's tuned in for the post pandemic zombie apocalypse.

Marlin, I can not remember a day at the range like this. Normally, pie-plate size groups at 50 are great. To have one such group is fantastic, but to have two is unimaginable..... I remember a few years ago WAYNO and I were shooting 38/357 revolvers off the same bench. We were able to hit clay bird chips on a fairly regular basis! That was lots of fun!

As far as the left thumb goes, it didn't bother me much. I will just live with what I have and adapt!

This topic makes me sad once again that I sold my S&W Model 29. I bought it brand new for $150 and sold it for $300 and thought I'd made a killing. Little did I know it was me.

Well, WAYNO and I went to the range today. I wanted to shoot both of these firearms at 25yds from a siting position using shooting sticks. I thought the accuracy would be equal to if not better.
I was sadly disappointed. The 44 was barely acceptable, groups being twice as large as the 50yd result....
I don’t know why, but I had to eat a big slice of humble pie today!

Dave, may not be you. Check the dates on the ammo. Might have gone out of date and the powder may be old. (I use that excuse sometimes). :mrgreen:

Allow me to see this from a slightly different angle. I was there.

First shot, 3 or 4 inches from the bull. Next two shots, side by side in the bull. The next three were again 3 or 4 inches out.

The potential was there.

I'm all for trying it again, and standardizing and duplicating every part of the process.

I've shot many thousands of rounds with Heliman. We both have good days shooting, and we both have days where we might struggle.

If he shot the wonderful little group last week, and this week had two out of six shots in the bull, that is not conclusive, good or bad.

Sometimes we just beat ourselves up. :mrgreen:
