And use a reputable local contractor. These shower in a day guys are predatory in their sales and financing offers.
Just for fun we had one give us the pitch to remodel a 5x7 bath in my brother’s rental.
Quoted $22k at first, got him down to $18 with military discount and removing “high-end” fixtures. We did the whole house for about $15k including the bathroom.

I use a shower chair and added grab bars. Anti slip mats and handheld shower head. Takes me 30-40 minutes to shower but I’m not dying if I can help it.

Well, plans have changed a bit. We're going full on handicap remodel. Tub/shower as mentioned, toilet and bars strategically placed. Additionally, we are having some of the doorways widened. The last was my idea. I remember how hard it was to maneuver a walker through some of the doors when I needed one. A chair, if it comes to that wouldn't make it.

Here's something that came up. My neighbor is building an ADU (additional dwelling unit, think old fashioned mother-in-law suite). All door now have to be wide enough for wheelchairs. Okay kind of makes sense. Except the unit is being built over her new and much larger garage, and is accessed by an exterior stairway. One thing for certain, whoever does the work will be the one dealing with permits and such. The stupidity of government officials isn't worth my time.

I looked at the showers. But my wife doesn't want to give up her tub.

If that’s the case and you absolutely have to keep a tub, buy a quality unit separately and have a reputable local contractor install it. Because he’ll come back when there’s a problem and he should also take care of all the finish work that comes with it.

Last home I built had handicap access everything. Wider hallways, 36” doors for bedrooms and bathrooms. Exterior ramps instead of steps. No elevator. My son is installing one for a customer now. They’ve come a long way with residential elevators.

We have two English Mastiffs and the older female slipped in the tub in the hall bathroom during a bath and refused to get in there any more! I had remodeled the Master Bath many years ago and wasn’t too thrilled about doing the work on the hall bathroom at all! So, we had three different local companies out for estimates! The first was 25 grand and the last ended up at 15 thousand dollar! We went with them for a full walk-in shower with maybe a three inch step in, grab bars, two shelves, no shower doors and using a shower curtain! Included was a new sink, vanity, mirror and new toilet plus the install was to be totally finished!
It took three days and they explained what they were doing as they went along and asked questions about the way they set up things like the grab bars to our satisfaction! We were totally happy with the results these two installers did (a young man and young girl)!
My wife had no issues with either Mastiff getting a bath in there( 165 and 206 lbs respectively)! The dogs were the only ones bathed in there for the first year and all was well until one of my partial knee replacements BROKE IN HALF just before Thanksgiving last year!! Well, I had to have the right knee repaired by converting it from a partial to a full knee replacement! I had the surgery done right before Christmas and when I came home, I used the bathroom with the walk-in shower and it worked out well! I would have been screwed if we still had both bathrooms with step in tub showers! I told my wife when she decided to have the hall bath converted to a walk-in that it was very fortunate for me that she did! Now being “elderly”, I use that walk-in shower exclusively and also enjoy the grab bars too! Good stuff! Money well spent!

We redid the master bath not long ago. While we used a regular step in tub, we put in a horizontal grab bar which is really nice. We should have also put in a vertical bar as you exit the tub. I’m sure the walk in shower is nice. The wife would like the redo the hall bath too so I’ll definitely keep a low curb shower in mind.
