Finding Money

Anybody else ever find money just laying around , not yours, but belonging to some unknown person or source ?
I take a long walk at least once a day for health and exercise. Hardly a day goes by that I dont find at least a few cents laying in the street. Course I pick it up. Yesterday I found 18 cents, the day before 12 cents.
Seems there is always change on the ground below any drive up window.

I once found a hundred dollar bill behind a drawer in a travel trailer we bought.
I also found a 5 dollar bill just laying along a ditch bank beside the highway one day.

I have a metal detector - find money every time I go out! :wink:

A friend told me the best 'detector' for finding money was a good pair of eyes. I believe that to be true. I find money regularly whenever I'm out just by looking at the ground.

The grain elevator in town glued a quarter to their floor. They have more fun with that quarter than a chipmunk in a bag of peanuts!

Put me in the same group. I find money,, AND I use a metal detector. I've found as much as $268 in cash one time,, and as little as 1 penny.
But,,, yep,,, I do find money & pick it all up.

Was at Sam's Saturday, walked down one aisle looking for an item, and about a half minute later retrace my route and there on the floor was a neatly folded ten dollar bill. I was never out of eye sight of the area and didn't see anyone walking by. I really thought someone was playing a trick so looked for strings or fishing line, expecting someone to jerk it out of reach when I bent over to pick it up, but no, it was just laying there in the middle of the walkway. I picked it up and stood there for a minute trying to figure out who may have dropped it, but no one anywhere close by, so I became 10 bucks richer!

Oh yes! I find mostly loose change in parking lots. Only once or twice have I found some paper money, except perhaps in the pocket of a winter coat.

A real good place to look is near an ATM terminal. Twice I have found $20 bills that someone had not removed from the terminal slot. Make darn sure you count the money that you get. When I did I was one bill over. I have never been shorted by an ATM but I guess it is possible.

took a day for bank to "audit" before they believed me. Out of town, bank closed when withdrawn, does inconvient to resolve

Hi,

Saturday I stopped at the office supply store. There was a car parked, an empty space next to it and then myself. In the car there was a woman driver with a male passenger, a somewhat elderly man, and she was giving him the third degree about losing $11.40 in change. You could hear her halfway across the parking lot.

I opened my door, and right there on the ground were a $10 and a $1 bill. I picked them up, walked over to the car and told the lady, "Ma'am, I can't help you with the forty cents, but this might be yours." I handed her the money. She was both thankful and amazed at my "honesty." I just figured it was the right thing to do...

On the street, I find money all the time, mostly change, though a couple of tens and a couple of twenties have shown up. One of the twenties was on the ground near a vehicle parked in front of a pet store, and I picked it up from my bicycle. Just about then, a woman with a panicked look on her face came running out of the store with a small boy. She asked if I'd seen a $20 bill on the street, and I returned it to her. The gratitude on her face was worth more than a handful of money!

Most of the time, it just goes in my pocket, though...

I was on a a ship traveling overnight from Croatia to Italy and could not sleep and so got up early in the am and was walking around... finally headed back down into the hold where my wife was and there on the stairs was $185 in American money... I thought I was real lucky for a while until I realized it was mine.... but I guess I was still lucky to a degree.

I was standing in line at a Walmart waiting my turn at the McDonald's concession when a stranger tapped me on the shoulder, handed me a wad of cash as said, "You dropped this." I said thanks and turned to see who it was but whoever it was was long gone. :?: :?: :?: I paid for my burger and went to my truck. When I counted that money it was $25 in small bills, the largest being a $10. Oh well. :roll:

I found $40 laying on the floor in a grocery store; It was late in the evening and I was about the only customer; Nice it paid for my purchase.
Long ago while living aboard our Ketch in Long Beach , I was on my way to work and stopped to buy a cuppa coffee at a 7/11 and found a $20 in the parking lot; FELT really GREAT until i got home and my spouse told me that friend that also lived aboard found $500 laying on top of a dock box that day. She never told the Marina office how much or what bills they were. They "offered" to hold the money and she told them to "F" off.
Nobody ever showed up to claim the money and we figured it was drug money.

I always find pennies on the ground. Most people won't bother to pick them up. I do and they go into a jar. I'm about ready to take that jar to the bank because it is almost full. Probably about $20 in it.

I went to a drive up at a bank once and the container that goes through the tube into the bank was full of money.
I put my check in it and sent it to the teller.
She ask me what she was supposed to do with all the money.
I told her I had no idea as it was in the container when I drove up.
I have no idea what happened to the money. Hopefully the person that left it got it back.

Years ago I was working at a local high school. We were replacing all the old florescent light fixtures with the newer florescent ones with electronic ballasts. I was working above the drop ceiling in a small office between the chemistry room and the physics room when I found over six hundred bucks. I turned it in and was told later that it was money from some kind of bake sale or something like that and that the teacher in charge was too busy to deposit it and just stuck it above the ceiling. personally I think BS, I think it was drug money and the person I turned it over to (supt. of schools) just pocketed it. Never even got a thank you or anything.

In the army back from Nam maybe $5.00 or other wise broke, coming down the steps at our barracks low and behold a crisp $100 bill at the bottom of the steps everyone gone for the weekend I was one happy GI. In 1970 that was a lot of money.

A full wallet on a ferry, which I turned in - it was a crew members and I was treated like a king for the whole ride. (I was about 10)

all kinds of cash in the parking lot of a dealership I worked at. It was next to a gas station. - one of these was really funny. I was walking with three porters. I spotted some cash ($7) and bent over and picked it up. They all freaked and started yakking about how lucky I was. As they yakked I bent over and grabbed another dollar. This started it all over again. I spotted another dollar and grabbed it. Now they were just going wild. Again I spotted another dollar and picked it up. They FINALLY started looking at the ground, but alas, I had already found all of it.

I once found a wallet stuffed with cash and credit cards. Turned out it belonged to a local Dentist who was mighty relieved and happy when I returned it to him.

I find change all the time in the parking lots of convenience stores. Lots of people don't like change rattling around in their pockets and just dump it in the parking lot.

I was in Walmart with my oldest daughter and she stepped right over a rolled up $20. Less than a week later she walked right over a folded $20 bill in the Olive Garden parking lot :mrgreen:

She felt bad enough so I paid for the dinner :)

A number of years ago, at our then large gun show here in Fort Worth, I found 5 $100 bills, neatly folded, on the floor, as my friend was looking at Kimber 1911. My first thought was, well here is my next Ruger. But then my conscience kicked in, and knew it was not mine. So off the office, told the "man" in charge, " I found a large amount of cash on the floor". Should any one inquire, have them call me, and identify the amount and denomination. Several hours I received a call from a fellow, he identified the amount etc. and even the location he felt he lost it, and it was where I found it.
We met at a neutral location he give him his money. He was very happy, and I believe I was as happy to do the right thing..

The most money I've ever found was $20 when I was a kid. Of course the most money I've ever lost was $50 :roll:

I did find $500 in cash with a check for $200 made out to cash. But it was in a wallet.
I tracked them down and gave it back.

I've found more than my share. Way more than I've ever lost. Seems to me people don't look where they are walking. How they keep from falling in holes is beyond me if they can walk by a $20 bill without notice.

I never have found money in a book, but I found a book at the thrift store for .50 cents. It was a copy of Sixguns by Keith with his autograph inside. I sold it for $80.00.

A woman pulled in next to me while I was pulling into the grocery. She got of her car and rapidly entered the store. I got out of my car and walked around to get my little girl out. When I get to the other side there's a $20 bill on the ground beside her front door. I went in and tried to find her but couldn't. I figured I'd wait in my car until she came out but when I got there her car was gone.

I find coins all the time. It is interesting because sometimes it is obvious that someone just threw their change away. I know that many don't like pennies, but it is often a pile of various coins. I can't not pick it up. Not that it really makes a difference in my finances, it just seems wrong to leave it.
OTOH, I have lost both a $20 bill and a $100 dollar bill. I hope someone put them to good use.
My wife has not lost cash, but two gold wedding rings over the years. Plus a $300 car key.

Back in 1990 a few days before Christmas I was eating at Wendy's in Grapevine Texas. I noticed a lady in her mid-twenties with a few little kids park a ratty old car next to mine. They came in and ate real quick and left. I left shortly after they did. I noticed a woman's wallet laying on the ground next to my car. I walked back into Wendy's & took one look at the manager & decided against leaving it with him. Got in my car and looked inside & found $268 + some credit cards. Her last name was Jones (!) I looked in the Ft Worth phone book and actually found their number. A guy answers & I asked for his wife, he says did you find a wallet? Yep, she agrees to meet me at Wendy's on Rufe Snow. She was really nice (and crying) she had assumed the $ was gone. She said that was the first $ they'd had in six months and was going to buy her kids gifts. She tried to give me $20.00-I refused. Cr@ppy weather was moving in and my oldest daughter was flying in that evening from Southern Illinois for the holidays- and to meet her new sister for the first time. I'll never forget that
