After almost 5 years of looking for a real job with benefits and decent pay I landed!!! I start in 2 weeks as a Sr. Inventory Analyst for a car parts company. Good pay, good benefits, good working hours, solid company and people seem to be very good folks. I get to apply my knowledge of inventory management and business to a new industry to me. It was nice to interview and not have someone ask stupid questions like "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" or "What is your greatest weakness?". They asked me real world questions that I could relate to my experience and truly listened and read my resume.

I can't wait to get started!

Congratulations! You did it. I ended up on a different path. After 5 years of hearing all about how I was overqualified and/or they weren't looking for senior staff, I turned 62 and filed for SS benefits while working at a menial task making less than 1/5 what I used to. Health ins. thru wifey's job, but the whole thing was not nor is now fun.

I understand completely where you've been, and I am very happy you made it out of there and now have a place to work that values your training and experience.

Good for you. :D

Hey Congratulations on the new position !

My degree was "Process Engineering, but as production manger at a couple of paint companies, I got to keep track of the finished goods inventory, Schedule production, print the production batch tickets, order raw materials and at the last company, do all the raw material receiving paperwork too as well as entering the the daily production numbers.
Would you believe they then complained that I was NOT spending enough time out on the production floor?

Congrats !!!

Persistence pays off.... especially when you have a marketable job skill (unlike a certain class of folks I won't mention who beef about not being hired, but have ZERO to offer the company).

I'll extend my heartfelt congratulations as well, as someone who until last week had been unemployed for nine months. I also finally found what promises to be a good job with excellent benefits and job security, but time will tell...

*fingers crossed, for both of us*

Thank you all. It is tough out there for mature workers. No one is speaking about it in the media or government but there is BIG TIME age discrimination going on out there in the job market. Some folks are just starting to find that employers are waking up and looking for solid experienced workers who have a wealth of knowledge, great work ethic and will dedicate themselves to the employer given the chance. I am so happy to find the job I now have and will bust my buns for them.

Good luck to all those out there looking for work. Keep networking and applying to everything you see. I did not stop ever looking even when I had settle jobs paying just above minimum wage. Be selective if you do take a low pay job. Don't do the greeter at Walmart or part time at Home Depot. Seek a challenging role that keeps your skill sharp and then keep looking. Odds are if they hire you cheap they will keep you cheap. I had several of these over the last couple of years and that great sucking sound is the life being taken from you. Work hard but know that the odds are they are taking advantage of you. Just do your work and keep looking for a better opportunity. Also mature workers have lots of experience so don't fall for the "one page resume" deal. 99.9% of the application happen on line so a long resume only adds words that can be searched in the search engine they use to sort out application. But you need a good hook. Make sure the front of your resume makes them want to read on to see the details for each job. State your skills and talents in a couple quick sentences, then list bullets of your specific skills/talents. After that list your jobs and by date and your education and certificates. My resume is 4 pages long and this employer and several recruiters did not worry about that at all. It's ok to have 1 page for every 10 years of employment.

Thanks again for the continued support and advise from those on the forum. Job seekers hang in there and do not give up , NEVER GIVE UP!

Hot Diggity Dog - Good for you !!

I have a real crappy boss, over 30 years now, ornery at times, hard to get along with, one sided, never listens, a real pain sometimes - hopefully YOU will not have this kind of clown to deal with day in and day out..........

Oh wait, I am self-employed :D
My goodness I described myself :(

I have a wonderful boss, raises are never an issue, goes along with everything I suggest, buys lunch, a real joy.............. May YOU have the same in your new job
