Finally, a .45ACP shot shell that actually works.

CCI has come out with a shot shell that is powerful enough to operate a full size 1911. I tested these in both of my RIA 1911A1-FS pistols. Both guns fed all 7 rounds out of their magazines and functioned perfectly....Powerful, evenly dispersed patterns of #9 shot, plus the plastic shot container punched a full caliber hole through the heavy cardboard target backing...Aluminum cased, boxer primed, probably not reloadable.

I have tested and carry them in a S&W Shield, .45acp. Also, 38spl and 9mm CCI shotshells. My opinion is that of the 3, (and I could carry any of them), the .45 is the best. Shooting a round of each caliber at paper, the .45 had a much larger amount of hits. As it should. The 9mm and .45 fire without jamming. As I recall I shot the test paper at about 5-6 ft from the muzzle. If they were made in .41 rem mag. I would carry that over the .45.

2nd hand information: An older guy that lives/hunts and hikes in rattlesnake county. Said, he has shot many snakes. Used the 38spl shotshells and many times had to shoot the snake 2 times, sometimes 3. Once he tried the CCI .45 acp, a good shot and it's all over for the snake. He gave up on the .38s. He has a 1911, full size, unknown brand.

DoubleTap is now making snakeshot loads using gas checks, shot and a hard cast base disk I have them in .32H&R and they do make a good pattern at 5 ft.

shot shells in the past seem to have been primarily only reliable in revolvers, autos often wouldn't cycle consistently in my experience.

nice to see that changing, I'll have to give those a try.

a handgun is a lot more handy to carry than a shotgun while doing chores or even just exploring.

snakes or other fast moving or dangerous critters can be challenging to stop with a bullet, especially when you least expect them.

I carry the CCI .45 ACP shotshells with #9 shot in my RIA FS, and previously used them in a Ruger SR19112 5barrel lightweight frame and a Para Lightweight Commander style (until some bastard stole it out of my truck!)

The CCI shotshells function flawlessly in these three 1911s. I trust them.

Killed a couple of copperheads and a cotton mouth water moccasin.
1 Shot stops.

CCI 45 shotshells are the first couple rounds in my EDC 1911 (followed by 200 grain JHP) when I am working with clients in New Orleans.

A good attitude adjustment for carjackers.

I have used the 38 special CCI shotshells with good effect on snakes but some required 2 shots.

The CCI 9mm shotshells, with the bullet shaped plastic capsules don't work for me in my Kahr CW9. Sometimes FTF for the second round, not enough slide velocity.

Some of the shot capsules have broken during feeding, spilling #9 shot into the internals of the pistol.
Complete breakdown needed for cleaning.

Some company needs to make a 9mm shotshell in the style of the 45 ACP round, longer cartridge, crimped with a shot cap.

FInd an old Remington, Marlin or Mossberg with a Routledge (smoothbore, Mo-Skeet-O) bore. They pattern very well with .22 shotshells.

I still have a partial box as well.
A couple of years ago I was shooting at the local range, many different types of shooters .

Got to know the owner range master and ask him about 9mm shotshells. He said he has not seen any that work.
I have some 9x23 brass
And 30 Luger dies to apply a reduced neck and crimp a 30 caliber gas check. Haven’t got to the project yet, but I will report when I do.

I’ve used CCI shot shells in both both .44 Magnum , and more recently in .45 Colt to good effect over the years. I load alternating cylinders loaded with shot shells and hog killer rounds when I’m in the woods.

As noted,, these have been around a long time. I think I still have some marked "Speer/CCI" in my odds & ends. And I know they are well over 20 years old.

BUT,,, as the OP has mentioned,, it was news to him. That's why we enjoy this Forum & the sharing of knowledge.

Many years ago,, when I was shooting in a weekly indoor informal match with a club,, a USPSA style stage was designed with helium balloons as one of the targets. A light exhaust fan kept them moving a lot. Everybody had issues trying to hit their balloon. I happened to have dome of the .45 acp shotshells in my stuff. Well, I won the stage,, and they all thought I was a wizard. I casually said; "Heck,, I'm, an old doorgunner,, I am used to hitting moving targets!" No one figured out my "trick" & such.

Well guys....In my own defense, I have known for years that CCI markets shot shells for handguns. The only ones I knew about though, used the familiar plastic capsule which as cajanchef pointed out in post #12, really don't work well in a semi-auto.......Until lately, I had no idea that there was something totally different being marketed in .45ACP, which BTW, is basically a higher powered version of the old military 45-shotshell that was developed for pilots way back when. In other words, it was designed to feed 'n function in a semi-auto right from the get go....So, regardless of it not "being new", the particular load that I linked to is a big step above the "plastic capsule" offerings, and for whatever reason, seem to hold a better pattern....Just didn't want that part to get lost in the new turn the thread seemed to be taking, that's all.

Me thinks that you'll find the relatively weak 9MM shot shell to be a waste of time and money no matter the platform...IMO, a much better option for use in your Blackhawk would be either of CCI's two 38/357 options, and even then you may need to shoot more than once.

Comments about the 9mm shotshells are spot on! The capsule can be 'toughened' somewhat but far easier to run them through a revolver. Speer did make shotshell capsules for handloaders (44 mag and 38). They worked fine in revolvers since they were 'flat nosed'.

Very interesting information about US developed 45ACP shotshells for pilots. I'm an aviation enthusiast, I have to look that up.

CCI needs to make a 9mm shotshell in the same pattern.

That was during the WWII era, but I don't know how long the were kept in service. I used to see them for sale several years ago, but haven't in a long time...Anyhow, the biggest difference in those and the newer CCI versions is that the ones that CCI markets utilize aluminum cases, have plenty enough power to function the 1911 pistol, and are non-corrosive.

Thanks for posting that picture. Interesting they say effective to 25 feet. I consider 15 feet the max range of CCI for effective one shot stops.
Maybe they helped some airmen, shot down over France, Italy, or the South Pacific.

At those distances the snake could care less about you and I could care less about the snake and let if go on it's way.
