My two favorite rifle cartridges are the 35 Whelen and 45-70 with the 10mm leading the pack for pistol calibers.

For plinking, I'm really starting to love the 17HMR.,
A couple of years ago I woulda never believed you could consistently pattern a rimfire rnd. out at 110 yds. in 1" circle.
But I do now
For deer and mid size game in areas you can shoot out to 250yds, The .243 in my Ruger SS Bull barrel varmint, anything bigger or further I like the 7mag, it shoots flat, long and hard out to 500yds.

I love my 6.8 SPC Ranch Rifle - a solid deer killer in a light, handy package.

The 308 in my user name is because that's what I had when I joined the group and I haven't bothered to get it changed.

So I guess you should be 6.8Dave now.
That has a ring to it.

I tried to change it once but it wouldn't let me - I could change other stuff in my profile but not the username. Either I'm missing something or a Mod. has to do it. I haven't pursued it because I read and learn - and get entertained - more than I post. :D

I'm hard pressed to believe that in this enlightened age that there are people that don't own a 30-06. Right up there with that classic is the 338 Win Mag and another classic 375 H&H. And who doesn't have or want a 30-30, 35 Remington and or a 45-70. There is darn little in North America the 30-06 won't handle up to and including the big bears with good ammo.

I think I am going to pick one actually.

When I become more "mature" than I am now, mature to a point where most all there is to do is look back, I hope to be back to where I started with a simple reloading setup dumping powder into .357 Mag brass.

Those were great times.

Great post.

I used to think ditto about the '06 till I got hold of a 6.5x55, and then realized the 6.5 would do everything...everything...the '06 would do and not even let you know it went off when you did it...

Pretty neat to see critters like elk drop over when you can't even recall pulling the trigger... ;)

For Handguns - .357 Magnum - So much you can do with that round if your reloading

Rifle - .270 - I haven't had the pleasure of big game hunting so my trusty .270 has done everything I've ever asked it to.

Shotgun - 20 gauge - Can't deer hunt with a rifle in Ohio. 12 gauge is overkill for deer and I like the 20 better for birds.

Wow. Great read. Good to see the diverse preferences. From Jn41's .25-06 (actually mentioned a couple of times, and from what I hear, an oft overlooked cartridge), to Aqbill's .243 (my understanding is it's a hard enough hitting, very flat shooting round -- good, versatile game gun).
.45-70 Gub'mint has been mentioned several times. I'd love a LA shorty in that chambering some day.

I don't hunt (but trying to remedy that situation), so my likings aren't nearly as eclectic, or interesting:

Longguns
.30-30 -- Classic, yes. Also a nastalgic cartridge for me.

.223/5.56x54mm -- Needs no introduction. Subduing tyrants and miscreants the world over.

7.62x39mm -- Inexpensive. Obtainable. A stopper. Just happens to be a perfect fit in my SKS. Well, lookie there!

(.22LR -- hardly needs to be mentioned.)
(12G -- Goes without saying.)

Fistguns
.25AP -- Entertaining.

9mm Browning Short -- Manageable... Adaquate.(?)

.38SP -- Of course.

Tree-fiddy-seb'm Magnum -- Done|
