I know the S&W factory letters aren't worth the $50.00 they get for them! $10.00 doesn't seem too high.
 
So, what information do you get on a Ruger factory letter?

I received a factory letter from S&W about 5-6 years ago for a Heavy Duty .38-44. It told the original configuration and what shop it was sold to. Is this what the Ruger letter gives?

Ruger letters will give you the model designation for the gun description you give, as well as the shipping date.
Example;
You apply for a letter saying you have a Blackhawk 45 Colt. Serial number 45-12345.
The letter will state if it was shipped as a BKH-44, BKH-45, BKH-44B, BKH-45B, BKH-44X or BKH-45X. It will give a shipping date of the month & year such as Jan 1972.

Ruger may not include the catalog number now. I've seen some letters that would state, Blackhawk model, 45 caliber with 7.5" barrel for an example. Still that's enough info for most folks for $10.
 
When you send in your payment and request, I'd recommend a cover letter to tell them specifically what info you're looking for or what you're trying to confirm.
 
I did this once on a low numbered ROA. It told be really nothing I didn't know already. I had a cover letter asking if it was owned in house, or if that number was 'allocated' to someone.... They would not tell me even where it was shipped to.

Colt provides the receiving dealer information in their letters and how many guns in the shipment. Just for historical info, that's all.
