Egad's, another .44 special

Sometime's I just need some self controll, was at a local pusher's last month and he had a 4 5/8" .44 Special flat top on the shelf. Well seeing as I already have a 4 5/8 incher and had ordered a NV in .44 Special at another dealer I took a pass. Fast forward to today and at that same shop the dang thing was still on the shelf! Well I now figured that a spare one was a good idea and I bought it. No doubt tomorrow the other dealer will call and tell me the NV just came in, oh well we make our own misery I guess. Hope this one shoots as well as my other two.

What's the problem?
When they were introduced by Lipsey's at the SHOT Show,, I immediately ordered mine,, and got it a few days later. Then,, I got my second one from Sheriff Jim Wilson after he tested it,, so I have a pair. After that,, THEN it becomes a "spare."

I finally took my blue 4 5/8-incher to the gravel pit yesterday with the test loads I finally got off my dragging unowat to build. :)
Had some minor tweaking done last year & have not gotten around to doing anything with it again.

While I've never been much of a 2400 fan, I took the advice of a trusted source who gew up with the stuff (back then, they only had three handgun powders- 2400, Unique, and Bullseye), and loaded five test loads at three-tenth-grain increments starting at 13.

Taffin tells me I can go higher, but I already have .44 Mags & was looking for something just a fraction over 1000 FPS in this Special.

13.3 grains put five 250-grain Keiths into 13/16 of an inch off a rest at 25 yards. Average velocity at ten feet was 1050 FPS. Best of the bunch, groups started to open up beyond that, and 1050 will do what I need that gun to do.

I actually WAS thinking of picking up a second one. :)

I picked up my first 44 Flattop yesterday too. I resisted but I was weak.

I too purchased the 4 5/8 version. I have not fired it yet; I had to work today to pay for the dang thing.

It sure feels nicely balanced with the heavier weight and the shorter barrel. You folks were right.

This gun (for me & NOT intending to start up a fight over the caliber :) ) is what made the .44 Special actually special.

The size, the workmanship, the steel gripframe & ejector housing, and the right load, all combined to fit a specific niche as a working gun here.
In any other gun, zero interest in the caliber.
But here- even though I told myself when I borrowed it that I wouldn't be keeping it, it talked itself into staying on. :)

Hi all, I had the new one out to the range yesterday and was not dissapointed, it shot just great! The cylinder base pin dident fly out and I dident have to crank the sight clean right either! Started out with 50 240gr jacketed and followed with 50 lswc's, both shot nice ragged one hole targets at 20 yards off hand. I find the fit of all three of my 44 flattops to be very nice and the finish on em are not all that bad. I've said it before and will do so again, Ruger aught to list these guy's as target gun's!
