I am picking up my new stainless Flattop .44 Spl tomorrow, that has been ordered since March and my next quest is grips. I have been looking at Eagle and am thinking about the Buffalo Horn. I am un-decided about smooth or checkered and I am hoping someone has tried these and have suggestions. My concern is fit and durability.

Firstly, Eagle Grips have never exhibited great fit and finish. While their fitted stuff is pretty good, their off the shelf grips are always found lacking. That said, I have a set of their grips in buffalo horn. The fit was decent on the sixgun they resided on. They are certainly beautiful. My problem was that with the polished finish when my hands began to sweat it became very slippery to handle. Not a good thing on a shorty Super Blackhawk shooting heavy loads.

So t`were it me and I wanted black grips, I would send my grip frame to Cary Chapman for a set in either black micarta or ebony. Make mine in the Colt style with bevelled bottoms.

I second CraigC on the black micarta. I've got several micarta grips from Lett and they have fit better than Eagle grips. However, I like the smooth finish better. Shooting 44 Special isn't as bad as 44 Mag but the rough checkering can sometimes scrap skin on the hands! At least that has been my experience.

I don't think you can get buffalo horn grips from Eagle grips anymore. The do still advertise them, but they don't have them, and I've been told by them that they don't have a supplier. I ordered three pair and waited months...and months. I am now waiting for a refund. After talking to them a couple weeks ago it sounds like it will still be more months to come before they get it worked out. They seem straightforward on the phone and I'll let you know when I get my money back ( more than $300.)
