Asking such questions of pit Snipe might get you an education you DO NOT want to experience.
Evil, wicked, mean, and nasty is a nice way to describe it. Pit Snipes are often tasked to back up security.
Rude, crude, and socially unacceptable, with NO Off SWITCH, is another nice way to describe them. Even the Marines avoid the oily, sweaty, and most disagreeable Snipes. They don't play fair. You will bleed, often to excess, but you will, regrettably, survive.
I doubt you'd invite a second date.
Do yourself a favor. Call it a day.

Damn! I didn't think you knew me! I've been in the boiler room or Powerhouse for my entire life and you speak the truth. We are a different breed and like you said, even Marines step wide around people like us. I don't have an off switch or filter either.
I wasn't a Navy Snipe but was a Chief Engineer for 10 years who had people afraid to come into the Powerhouse. I even offered to brain the business agent of a union who was fighting with a member of another union who was working in my building. I grabbed a shovel ala Blazing Saddles and ran him up the stairs as fast as he could run and threw him out of the building.

The Navy has good food, but snipes see damned little of it, ever. Fresh air, sunshine, and liberty is also in scant ration. The upside is the loyalty among the Snipes. 'Nuff said there. Draw your own conclusions.
First onboard, last to leave, and NOTHING on the ship works without the Snipes. No electricity, AC, fresh water (hot or cold), no toilets, no food (fresh, or frozen).
Snipes are looked down upon by ship's company, and air wings, until they realize they need us. It's not a job for everyone.

I'm plenty ornery as needed. My mentors were Snipes and it rubbed off. We always stuck together and what happened stayed in the boiler room. I had that same rule in the Powerhouse.
I used to cook for my crew several times a week and they were happy.
It worked and I am actually back working there as a 1st Class Engineer. I'm off now for a broken ankle and surgery this coming week. I'm on the midnight shift and only see my work partner which is great.

A fart has more brains and BTU value than you. The only thing you could be in a boiler or engine room is something to get in the way or trip over.

Yup I did almost qualify as a NUC expect for that toke I took, but like Bill Clinton I didn't inhale. Yet nobody cares if my name is written in Monica's handwriting in the snow on Pennsylvania avenue.
Just what WERE your ASVAB scores? I scored anywhere from a 92 to 98 depending on the subject in the 1976 tests. I kept the wallet card for years until it disintegrated from WORKING in boiler rooms and Powerhouses. Working so far below the waterline we should've gotten sub pay. That's just a wee bit farther than below decks, and literally an inch from open ocean on every side, unless you are between fuel tanks, or below the missile, or bomb mags.
Not many can say they've seen the insides of the engines ....from inside the engines. I won't even go into the details THAT ivolves.

Yet I had invitations to all the Service Academies but it Broke Dads Heart when I passed on Notre Dame for DePaul. Then Uncle Sam Sent me a letter, and while I was standing in line they ran out of folks that Uncle Sam needed that day. On the way home I stopped at the Navy Recruiters Office. The rest is history. Wait, all this is ancient history!

I did get one Bubble head question, it came on my first MRI. The kid asked if I was claustrophobic before he pushed the button to send me into the tube. I asked if he was going to fill it with cold Pacific Sea Water, he said no so I asked him to wake me when it was over. Somewhere along the way he asked me to quit snoring. I had the perfect orderly that I knew when I worked at the prison. He would have made you tremble... As far as lame and lazy.. Cancer surgery is next. The Chief Engineer wants me back as soon as I am able.
