Dumb SR9 Question

About the only thing I don't like on my early SR9 is the mag release. It is a round knurled knob that rotates when being pushed. That's pretty dumb in my book. The "D" shaped one just pushes in like a mag release should. The trigger on the newer SR9's is a little smoother also.

Sure, from my understanding Ruger tightened up tolerances, but also made minute adjustments to some geometry. Those like eGalloway can elaborate more as he's studied them more than I have (and has both guns). The general consensus of people who've shot both original (but post-recall) SR9's and the newer "V1.2" SR9 is that the trigger is less stacky and overall improved.
Ruger's goal (IMO) was to present a more uniform trigger from SR9 to SR9. The reception from users is that it is better now.

Thank you for the follow up answer to my question. I'm very pleased with my SR9. It sounds like the differences are somewhat negligible in terms of overall functionality, if I'm understanding you correctly. I don't shoot my SR9 enough to let a "stacky" trigger irritate me too much. I've only run a couple hundred rounds through mine so I'm no SR9 expert, but I didn't experience any malfunctions of any kind.

Ruger upgraded my trigger for free on my SR9. S/N 330-xxxx has the round mag release and the smaller tab on the take down pin. It is post recall but the older rougher gritty trigger pull.
I paid the shipping and was very happy to do so.
They came out with the updated trigger assembly around Aug of 2009. This is what Rugers customer service told me.
I didnt think much about the trigger pull until I purchased the SR 40 and the triggers were night and day. This is when I contacted Ruger about the SR9 trigger.

Hey, the Round shaped release is just that, round, it is a plastic pin with stippling molded onto either end. It has the same wedge shape molded into it to actuate the release lever in the frame as the D shaped. The D shaped mag release was first used on the SR9c. The SR40 got it and when Ruger started producing the SR9 again after they stocked up on the SR40 the SR9 got the updated mag release and take down pin.
As for the internals Josh is right. At the release of the SR9c Ruger improved the internals of fire control system to create the improved trigger most like in the SR9c, and later in the SR40. Sadly the SR9 did not get the improvements till well into the production of the 331-xxxxx SN units. Not all 331 SN will have the D shaped release but they all seem to have the updated fire control parts. Ruger changed several components in the update. I sell a update kit on my site that includes all factory parts to do the update yourself. Will be cheaper to get it than to pay shipping and FFL fees to return it to the factory, in most cases.
Anyways hope that helps, I suggest don't worry to much about it, clean it really well, in the striker tube and channel then shoot the snot out of it and enjoy it!

Josh has a great write up on how to take the gun down and polish it, it will help the gritty feel quiet a bit and in the process you'll get to clean the striker work areas as I suggested in the previous post.
