Dry fire question

newbe here, just picked up an SR9C. Finished initial cleaning & had a question about the dry fire. Magazine is empty. When I pull the slide back it locks in place. Is this normal when the mag is empty? My other question is (after releasing the slide forward) the trigger is in the forward position, not rearward. It's been a while since I've shot a semi-auto but I thought it was the opposite, trigger rearward when a bullet is chambered & ready to fire.

Don't even try to load it until you read the manual.

Read the manual, no mention of what position the trigger is in when it's ready to fire but it does have travel & 'clicks' when I pull it & doesn't have any available travel after dry firing.

Because the SR9c has the mag disconnect safety, make sure you've inserted the mag before dry firing (many people just removed the mag safety) or use snap caps. After you press the trigger to dry fire, you'll need to rack the slide for the next one.

From page 19 of your owners manual .....

CAUTION: Dry firing your RUGER® SR-SERIES with the magazine
removed may result in damage or unnecessary wear to the magazine disconnect mechanism and/or striker.

NOTE: When dry firing the SR-SERIES pistols, the trigger will not
automatically move forward to reset. The slide must be retracted at least 1/2” to reset the trigger and firing mechanism.

Hittman, don't know how I missed the '....trigger will not automatically move forward...' after reading the manual 3 times. Got the part about having the magazine in place though. Thanks for pointing it out. I really hope this isn't a premonition :?

I cheated. It was easier for me since you already said what you were missing. Wish I had a nickel for every time I couldn't find a grip screw or something of the sort that was laying on the bench right where I left it.
