Lately, I've seen a few commercials on TV for various medications and as they run over the list of side effects they invariably say, "...don't use (name of med) if your allergic to (name of med) or its ingredients."

Questions:

#1 - How do you know if you're allergic to the stuff if you've never used it before?

#2 - How do you know if you're allergic to its ingredients if they don't tell you what's in it?

...mean...Duh!

What it really means is that if you have an allerigic reaction to the medication don't keep taking it.

...of course there are side effects to almost all meds. I guess those don't count.

The one I love is, "If you are (fill in the blank: pregnant, HIV positive, suffering from terminal cancer, etc.), tell your doctor."

Somehow I've always been under the impression that it was the doctor's job to tell me...

Nope. It means exactly what it says. Why?
Because if you take it and have a reaction and croak the maker can say they told you not to take it.

The one I remember most was "The Blue Pill."

Ask your doctor if it's right for you.

The only thing was that in the early ads, they didn't say what it did, so I guess the ads were targeting hypochondriacs.

I worked mostly in the ER and surgery.
At least twice a week I would see some rep from
Bill & Bob's Pharmaceutical company stroll into the ER
and proudly proclaim the benefits of his new wonder drugs
to the docs. Then he would leave samples and a bunch of literature.
Don't anyone believe it isn't all about the money.

I think the "tell your doctor what medications you are taking." is the 'winner'. Seems to me that your doctor should be very aware of what you are taking. I know mine knows everything I now take or have ever taken in the last few years. If I have to tell him, I might be looking for a new doc.

FM in this world of specialists, your primary care doctor may not be aware of a medication your Dentist, Cardiologist, Proctologist, Gynecologist etc has prescribed for you. Get the gist? ( Pun intended)

Or if they a counter prescribing each other.

My father in law final got a primary doctor to intervene between all of his specialists when, after it was discovered his heart doctor's prescription was countering a prescription from another specialist. When asked, the heart doctor said, "I don't care it messes up his xxx, as long as he doesn't die from a heart issue."

I can't speak for others but I know that my primary care Dr knows what my urologist and pulmonary specialists prescribe. They in turn know what the others prescribe also. I thought it would be a good idea that they know.

YUP!!! My primary Doc keeps up with all my meds and stays in contact with my specialists If the specialist gives me a new prescription . first question to him is "what will it do, then how long do I take it?" If it's longterm, my primary issues refills and all Doc's are updated with the current Rx list. Every Doc knows what the other docs are doing.

.

The one that really cracks me up is the inclusion of a "possible death" in the disclosures - who, in their right mind, would EVER take such a med ?

YMMV, but I think someone would have to be pretty desperate to take a med with the risk of death.
