A big +1 to the above comments.

And,, just think,, there was only a 9 year difference in their ages. How many of the adults involved know of a couple who's ages are that far apart,,, or even further?
Yes,,, at 16,,, they are young,, but they are also full of hormones & raging desires quite often. Just look at all the YOUNG teenage pregnancies!!!!!!

Trauma? NO WAY!!!!!!!

I'd love to hear your comments if the student were one of you fellows' 16-year-old daughters. In some states, 16 is the age of consent -- but there's still a problem, legal and otherwise, when the adult involved is in a position of authority over the young person, as is a teacher, camp counselor, physician, minister, etc., etc.

Even though I agreed with the male comments above at the same time I was thinking how most folks would feel if the news story was as pisgah described ... 16 year old girl and 25 year old male teacher... I'd be willing to bet most of you guys would be planning a serious whupp ass.

At least they're enforcing the laws equally. No, I don't think he felt he was "violated." But if she was stupid enough to record it...

Just an everyday occurance in the news. Seem like at least twice a week, maybe more you read about something just like this. Sometimes the teachers are even married, or married with kids of their own.

Most women are wired differently, and yes if it were my 16 yo daughter, I would view it a lot differently! How often do you hear of a man/16 yo boy being raped by a woman? I rest my case.

Some people may not want to face the reality that men and women are, in fact, different. And male culture is different from female culture. Of course there can be sexual abuse of males, but this is not that type of case. When I was 16 this would have been my wildest fantasy dream, and certainly not a trauma. It is just the need by some folks to make everything absolutely equal that they have to straight faced say that this was abuse and traumatic for the boy involved, but I doubt that anyone REALLY believes it.

If that had been a male teacher, he would have gotten 30 years, not the year that she got.. When women do the exact same time that men get, talk to me about equality..

We've gone from "No child left behind, to No child's behind left alone."

Yeah, she was teaching him something alright.. But it damn sure wasn't Spanish.. Those kind of lessons, that kid don't need to learn until a bit later in life.. Especially from a missile twister like her..

At that age, every 16 year old kid I knew was conniving, scheming, planning or doing anything they could to get what that kid got.

If she recorded it, I'm surprised she wasn't charged with kiddie porn.
Adult male preying on adolescent girls-pedophile, sexual predator, stealer of childhood
Adult female preying on adolescent boys-seductress, male fantasy.

Not traumatised at all. I remember hearing stories when I was in school but I doubt they were true. We sure liked our young female teachers though!

When I was a Junior in high school, a just out of college female teacher showed up and Boy Howdy was she a doozy. Primarily a librarian and sub for 3-4 other classes, she had a big crowd in "study hall" but the boys were studying anatomy rather than history.
That's been a LONG time ago but I saw her last year(still pretty spiffy for her age BTW). While sitting in her kitchen(with her hubby there also), we were talking about old timie stuff. I commented about the stir she'd made and she even got a wee bit of color in her cheeks and hubby just grinned.
She showed excellent personal restraint even through the constant drooling and ogling of a bunch of teenage boys looking to boink such a prize.

Inappropriate personal relationships between subordinate and superior are never a good thing. They negatively affect the entire organization, not just the few people involved.

Yeah, many of us laugh at this particular situation, but consider the damage it caused.

Similar story here.

There was a hot 20-something teacher who was on her very first semester. On the last day of the semester she was all teary-eyed, emotional and sad as we were all leaving for the Summer. As we were leaving, she stood sadly in the doorway and gave out handshakes and a few hugs.

One dude - a good-looking swimmer with lots of "experience" took advantage of the situation. She gave him a little hug which turned into a big hug followed by a long, passionate kiss. The teacher turned beet red as she was a willing (though unexpected) participant. Very funny. :)

All I got was a handshake. :?

Just this morning I saw where a 31 year old teacher who is also a mother had sex with a student from her special education class was in court to face charges. Guess who was standing by her side. Her HUSBAND.
Teachers may think they are being sly but high school students have a tendency to brag to their friends ( as do some teachers) so it doesn't take long for everyone to find out, including the police.

That sums up how I was at 16 for sure, heck I was that was at 14!

Only damage is what that teacher did to herself. That kid was as traumatized as the rest of us were when we fired our first tight group.

From many of the comments posted on this subject, I can say it seems none of you were ever sexually victimized by an adult in your youth. Say a prayer of thanks tonight.

I have a close friend now 64 years old who has had the most messed-up sex life you can imagine for the past 50 years, and who only last year with the help of his minister and psychologist was able to realize that his difficulties arose from the time he was seduced by a female teacher at the age of 14. Thank God he finally had the courage to seek help and is now happier than he has been for 5 decades, and planning to be married to a wonderful, understanding, Christian woman in the Fall -- his fourth marriage, and one that he is sure will last -- as am I, now that he has conquered his demons. Another dear friend lost a son to suicide at age 21, lost in self-destructive guilt over having been molested by a male teacher at age 12.

I myself had an encounter with a male molester at age 13 but I had the ability to deal with it right away. He was an algebra teacher notorious for pulling his chair close to his male students' desks and fondling them as he was "helping" them with algebra problems. The first time he tried it with me, I took a freshly-sharpened #2 pencil and put it through -- ALL THE WAY through -- his hand. He turned white as a sheet and ran from the room, blood streaming from his hand. I stood up, announced, "Class dismissed!", walked down the hall to the principal's office, and called the police -- over the principal's loud objections, by the way. Mr. Math never returned, and I have never since hesitated to defend myself in any situation. Watching so many of my friends be humiliated and abused had steeled me by that time to do what needed doing if and when my turn ever came.

Laugh if you want at this sort of situation. Meanwhile, I'll pray for you, and that nothing of the sort ever happens to someone you love.

Nobody is saying this is proper, or just a joke, and one reason why I consider the Coed Military to be such a failure is the problem of improper sexual relationships between superiors and subordinates, though the complaint there is that women trade sexual favors for preferential treatment.
But those of us who were 16 year old boys with normal sexual inclinations, raging hormones and a lack of maturity..."Success is nothing more than taking advantage of an opportunity,"

That's the problem... with enough testosterone running through your system it can become 'any port in a storm' type syndrome.....

I'm still amazed at all the herbal supplements being promoted out there to 'enhance' one's testosterone.... and somehow we claim to be a just say no to drugs society

The comments about a person of power using it to traumatize a younger person is hard to explain when we had a President named Clinton that got some very special favors from a much younger woman (though of age) and it traumatized her so much that she has made a fortune from the fall out (bad choice of words) and all it got him was a not guilty after lying under oath and getting impeached...

At age 16 I'll not comment about personal situations but sure glad "that woman" was not charged nor arrested.
