Years ago I met with some of my students at the college who we held each other responsible to memorize 2 scriptures a week and add to the ones we had already memorized. Navigators have a great program for that. Thinking of starting again.

I don’t know if you’d call it mental exercise- but I’m always fixing or building something, researching something, etc. I think I have the same problem a lot of folks have- especially like with names as was mentioned above. I can remember dates/serial numbers/ load data/torque values and a ton of other stuff- as long as I find it interesting.
But we are all different. I can tell my wife “Don’t use the passenger side window in your Jeep- I have to replace the regulator. If you use it then it won’t go back up.” The very next day… “Honey, why won’t the passenger window go back up?” But on the other side of the coin, I can go into town to the gun store- she will ask me to get some milk or something- and I will get back home without the least recollection of what she asked for.

I'm a storage networking support engineer, so mental exercises are all I do... Day in, day out... :D
My MIL was a big fan of jigsaw puzzles and word games. Didn't help her a bit as she went looney toons regardless.
I've noticed a bit of regression after retiring and not having a heaping load of manure to keep organized in my brain. Consolation is: I haven't died of a heart attack as was a possible outcome due to the stress of dealing with that load of manure daily.

At the age of 81 do have some memory issues but have found a technique that works for me is to simply say "shift your mind back to neutral" and rethink what I was trying to remember, and it usually works for me, just a suggestion for others to try it out. My mother (bless her soul) died from Alzheimer's disease as well as my wife's mother and it was explained to me by various Doctors that with the disease the body and its normal functions simply shut down and death follows. Have been seeing articles that a drug has been brought forth that is supposedly a semi cure for the disease, but "father time" will have its way with all living creatures.
I am in a band and play full time. Our band leader constantly changes the set list and invites guests to play with us which keeps me learning. I'm also an avid reader of bios and always searching things on the internet. The only game I play is a word game called word trip.

I have never remembered names, used to sit at a conference table and arrange the business cards accordingly to how the sat at the table, worked fine and for the most part I never really cared to know there names anyway! Neve forget a gun or anyone I actually like to meet. Have never forgotten a good person’s name
Bob's post is actually really important for many of us (older folks). Research is showing that doing certain mental exercises can ward off or at least slow down many forms of dementia.... I actually need to look into this more and find the exercises that these experts are suggesting. I know that I'm starting to lose some of my cognitive functions...

I do Sudoku puzzles daily. NYTimes Easy, Medium, and Hard. Plus the Daily GAS (Generally Approachable Sudoku) Puzzle. But alas, I'll never be at the level of Tantan Dai.
I have a strange quirk regarding remembering names. If I am introduced to a new person in a social setting I can't remember their name until I start to have conversation with them. I always have to ask for them to repeat their name for me. It's like when I am introduced to them my mind is too occupied in noting facial features etc. and the name just doesn't stick for me. Once I ask them to repeat it then I'm ok.
I often write out math problems rather than using a calculator.
Also figure stuff using trig and algebra when others go get the CAD operator to figure it.
As a pump technician, I don't NEED to figure the math on GPM / head/ horsepower, etc, but I do.

I'm OCD. (Just ask my ex. ;)) I'm a counter. Seems I make everything a math problem. It sure keeps the wheels turning.

Reading both fiction and non-fiction, playing trivia, reloading with music playing, playing Jungle Rules Backgammon, doing math in my head, gym time…shutting the mind off for prolonged sleep is the hard part.

I am rereading my Calculus books, learning the banjo. And I take Lions Mane mushroom pills and avoid carbs.
After finishing a day at work my brain goes into shutdown mode due to sensory overload. It's all I can do to remember the way home.

I do math backwards … X-ring, 9-ring, 8-ring, then I lose interest and patience.
I also recite names … Smith, Browning, Colt, Wesson, Sturm, Beretta, Ruger, then I lose interest and … what was the question?

I do puzzles, jeopordy, RELOAD alot and take ginkgo. If I think too much, current events especially my blood pressure rises. So I have followed what's on my key chain, "you obviously have mistaken me for someone who gives a yugo... " lol My memory is better and so is my blood pressure..
