My driver's license is up for renewal so I went to the DMV today. Before I left home, I checked online to make sure that they weren't getting today off for Independence Day. Big button says, "Holidays" so I clicked and it said they were closed Friday the 3rd and Saturday the 4th.

I got there only to discover that they aren't open on MONDAYS. WTF. So this week they had Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday off.

I guess that the DMV is too broke to hire enough people to be open six days a week.

I'm reminded of a time I went to my town hall to do some town hall stuff. I got there about 4:05 and discover that they closed at 4. As I was leaving the police chief was walking past and hit me with his night stick (just kidding) . . . he asked what I needed. I commented on the early closure and he said, "Well, the do open at 8 AM and that's their eight hours." I replied, "I know that they take a lunch break from noon to one. " He didn't understand my point.

Gotta love those folks who suck the government teat and make our lives more complicated.

In Florida DeSantis granted this fourth of July holiday to include Monday the 6th. Sometimes viewing the local news channel for weather and current events is prudent? National News, Meh not so much....

Our DMV has been Mon - Sat for a couple decades now.
Used to be Mon - Fri but many complained that working folks work those same days and have to use up sick or vacation time. So ….. they listened and changed.

My Town Hall is open Mon., Weds.,Thurs., from 8 to 4; Tues., 8 to 6:30; Fri., 8 to 12:30.
When added up they are open for 39 hours. Apparently no one ever eats lunch, if you believe that one I have a bridge in Brooklyn I’d like to sell you.

I avoid going to the DMV or any government agency without an appointment.

I visit the agency's website, select a date and time and get confirmation via email and/or text that my appointment has been scheduled. I then put the appointment on my phone's calendar with reminders.

You have to understand just how the mind of DMV employees works.

It explains everything.

My 16th birthday was on a Saturday. I waited patiently Sunday, and was up early Monday to go take my test. Our local license office was closed. We discovered Mondays was their regular closed day, and all the offices rotated with four day weeks or something like that. I had to take the test at another location.

I think they stopped that many years ago and were open five days, but they ran our county into near bankruptcy, and announced offices are all now closed on Fridays, and the rest of the week, they close at 3:30 PM.
This makes no sense, because all the people working there are on salary and now they get paid the same amount to work fewer hours.

I started going to the next county over to their license office during the great silliness, because they didn't get nearly as silly.

Back 7 years ago when I applied for Social Security they made an appointment for me to come in to check my birth certificate... showed up and took all of 20 minutes... last year I called to make an appointment for something.. .and no go just have to show up take a number and sit down and wait.

Other than for driver tests, I've never heard of making an appointment at the DMV or MVA (Maryland).

Well, now you can research making appointments on the agency's website.

Wife & I recently changed our address on our licenses. We made appointments so we would not have wait in line. Appointments are available for every service offered, license plate renewal, registering a new to you vehicle, etc.

This from the Maryland MVA site: "Take care of everyday license and vehicle needs anytime with myMVA online or a self-service kiosk. Need in-person help? Make an appointment at a Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration branch office or testing station near you.

They instituted appointments here in TN when they started the Real ID. Lines were out the door and down the street. When you schedule an appointment, it's for 2-3 weeks ahead, so don't wait like I did. I went in March just to renew my license that had expired the day before, so I couldn't wait for an appointment. It took two hours for me to get done. Many folks came in, registered they were there for an appointment, and were done in a few minutes. They have three kiosks to do simple things like renewals that you can use, no waiting. I was dropping my motorcycle license, so I had to see someone.

Yes Md MVA is best to make an appointment for anything if you don’t want to wait. I’ve done it for real ID, license renewal and title change. I haven’t been there in a few years but it was nice to get in the appointment line (shorter) to get the new license.

Never had a long wait in Maryland. Didn't even know that appointments were an option. Maybe they weren't twenty years ago.

That's new, at least to me. The last time that I was at the MVA, you went in and a guy gave you a colored ticket.

It doesn't look like Pennsylvania does appointments for anything other than driver tests. Back in the day (1975), that was first come, first serve.

They started using appointments some years ago. It was an unmitigated disaster. The process simply didn't work. But after a major overhaul it works pretty well.

Most things can now be done online. Notable exceptions are first time things like driver's licenses or handicap placards. Thereafter those are done online unless you need new photos, prints or an eye test.

I joke about the silliness of the sign I posted, but the local office actually does a fairly good job of reality is they just need more staff.

On the plus side, most vehicle registration issues can also be handled at the local AAA office. The AAA is less busy and better staffed.

making appts isnt always a good fix.
you make the appt, then they fall behind at the office, so you wait 30 mins anyway, waiting to get to the window.
then.....
when you do, they find something wrong and require you togo home and find something else needed and .....you guessed it. you gotta make an appt 2 weeks from now.

good ole conn dmv.
its the military all over again.

I went to the Maryland MVA to renew my wife's registration. Got to the window and lady says, "Your wife didn't sign this. I'm sure that she's out in the car waiting for you. Go get her to sign it and come back." I walked outside, forged a signature, and went back to the head of the line.

I'll stick with my fake ID.
my wife just recently decided not to renew her Driver's License due to health reasons, she hasn't driven since 2022, unfortunately her skills have diminished, and she recognized herself that she shouldn't be behind the wheel. So, when she went to the bank to make a withdrawal they asked for ID. She showed them her old license, which was 17 days expired, and they refused to accept it because it was expired, even though it was the same ID they showed on their system. So, we decide to get her a NYS Non-Driver ID Card. But in order to do that you can't just submit your recently expired Driver's License and have it transferred to a Non-Driver ID. No, you have to start the process all over by submitting 6 forms of ID, etc. and pay the new fee of $175 total. Hmmm, so instead we just resubmitted her US Passport to get her a US Passport ID Card, for $35 and had it in 10 days. Oh, the wheels of bureaucracy . . . . . 🤬

In the 6 years I have used appointments in FL, for both personal and as the company rep for company vehicles, I have not encountered the situation you describe.

Yep, you cease to be you when your license expires.
When my wife came out and told me this, we went back in and I tried discussing the matter with the branch manager, even suggested that she contact her supervisor to resolve the issue then and there which she refused to do. So, I simply asked her to fill out a fund's withdrawal slip for all our accounts holding. When she looked at our accounts and how much was being withdrawn, she tried to back pedal, but that door had closed. Then as she was processing that slip, I called a friend who just happened to be a board of directors' members and calmly explained the issue and why we were leaving this financial institution. He was cordial but not overall please and stated he'd pass the matter along to the board for review. I'm not sure what happened to that manager, but I understand that she disappeared from that branch shortly thereafter. No idea if reassigned/relocated or terminated . . . . 🤷‍♂️ all over a simple asinine rule 😠which greatly impacted the customer and proper service 😞
