Dinner or Supper

We were just discussing meal plans and I said we should grill sometime today. My wife asked, 'When should we grill? For lunch or supper?' I said, 'For dinner.'

And she asked, 'Which one is that?'

This has been a 35-year debate. We need your help!

For your evening meal, what is it? Dinner or supper?

In my family, we used the terms interchangably for the big evening meal, though mostly "dinner."

The midday meal was ALWAYS "lunch," NEVER "dinner."

First meal of the day . . . breakfast.

Midday meal . . . lunch . . . except on Sunday when it's served at around 1:30 in the afternoon and is a five-star family production, which is then called dinner. :wink:

Evening meal . . . supper . . . which on Sunday is almost always leftovers from dinner. :wink: :wink:

As a kid growing up in the late 40s-50s it was supper, but somewhere in time it changed to dinner. Yep lunch has always been lunch. Like in lunch box, lunch money, lunch room and so on.

I worked shifts and long hours and I seem to recall just using the phrase "Let's go eat" and then what ever the resturants were serving

I use the terms interchangeably, but in the Army, mid-day meal was dinner and the last meal of the day was supper, except on Sunday, the mid-day meal was called supper.

When I was a kid, the farmers has breakfast around 6, lunch around 9, dinner at noon, lunch around 3 and supper when the work was done for the day. You didn't see many fat farmers either.

Breakfast is the 1st meal of the day, dinner is @ noon & supper is the evening meal... lunch is something you pack in a bag or box to take w/ you. Where did the notion of dinner @ supper time come from anyway?

Breakfast, lunch and dinner...but sometimes we use supper interchangeably with dinner.
Why??? No idea... don't think it matters a great deal, either.

Was always breakfast, dinner, then supper. "lunch" was used if you were just eating a sandwich. To each his own!!!!!
