In cleaning primer pockets on some bulk 45 auto cases, I found some unusual Winchester cases. They have a small primer that appears to have a crimp and are marked "WIN NT 45 AUTO". I've included a picture next to a standard Winchester case for reference.

Anybody have any ideas about the WIN NT case? I'm going to separate them out simply because of the small primer.

Non-Toxic, baby!

So ya don't give a guy lead poisoning from shooting him.

Actually, there's so many ranges requiring clean bullets. That can be accomplished by enveloping a lead core completely, as in a true full metal jacket...

Or where lead is not allowed, period, tin can be used to replace the lead core. That is the case with this Winchester ammo.

Winchester has recently began marketing tin rimfire ammo also. And only from what I've read, with less than stellar results.

The jury is still out.

WAYNO.

I understand that in the past there were other companies that used small pistol primers with the 45 acp. Federal uses small pistol primers in some 45 acp rounds. There may be Win NT brass with larger flash holes. These changes are no doubt because of different requirements with NT/win clean cartridges. If you search on the net you can find lots more info. 8)

That .45 ACP brass with the small primers use primers that do not have lead styphnate as part of the primer mix. Operators of indoor ranges were being made sick with some dying from the lead dust from the primer mix.
For the record, Winchester does not recommend reloading those cases, not because the brass is bad or weak, but because if one gets mixed up while priming normal .45 brass, trying to seat a larger pistol primer in that smaller primer pocket is inviting disaster. Also for the record, you can reload them using normal small pistol primers and they shoot just fine. Just be damned sure you don't mix the two types and you'll be just fine. I do it all the time but I paint the bases of the shells with the small pocets with nail polish. makes them easy to identify and separate.
