Custom Grips

I have been looking on line at aftermarket grips for my NM Blackhawk. There are a lot to choose from but none that I want. I have seen several on this and other forums that are very dark hardwood and simple, meaning no checkering or finger grooves or unusual shape.

I can't seem to find those for sale. I did find a few actually that were dark rosewood and I can't remember which vendor had them but they were currently unavailable.

Anybody know where I can find some like this?

If you are seeking aftermarket grips which are made from wood and conform to all of the sizing aspects of Ruger factory (BH) grips, then no I do not. Every single set which I've ever looked at are either thinner, thicker, feature a different contour, lack the factory bevel on the bottom, are sometimes longer...or are some combination of each of those.

Now, that's not say that this or that after market grip maker couldn't make you a set because some of them probably could. All I'm saying is that I've yet to see the style of grips which you seem to be speaking of in any of their usual offerings.

I'm not exactly sure what you're looking for, most people aren't when looking for a new set of grips, but I can give you a few leads.

I make "enhanced thickness" grips for the XR3-RED and "New-XR3" grip frames. By enhanced I mean that my grips are thicker at the top than stock, but stock thickness at the bottom. They are all smooth and can be flat or bevel bottomed.

Thank you, that is a lot of good info. I guess I have to first figure out if mine is XR3 or XR3-RED. I don't have my revolver yet, it is on order from Bud's.

When I do I will have to PM you Carl, because when I went to your site, the first photo that comes up shows just the kind of set that I have in mind, though I don't see that color down below on the actual grips for sale.

If your Blackhawk is the standard large frame it uses the XR3-RED size. If it's the FlatTop Blackhawk, the XR3 size.

If I can refresh this thread, I have been looking at various grips makers and after some initial sticker shock I can see that I cannot afford to deny myself this little luxury. I have been re-reading Max's "Gun Digest Book of Hunting Revolvers" and if I understand it, he seems to recommend grips that are fitted to your individual hand.

I see on various websites a reference to sending in your grip frame to get a perfect fit on your frame but I have seen nothing on fitting the grips to your hand. I have not contacted any of the makers yet so maybe a few calls and emails are in order. But maybe it will be faster if someone can recommend a maker or two that can do individual fitting.

I looked at the websites for all gentlemen mentioned earlier in this thread but I did not see anything on that kind of custom service. Any ideas?

I have a set of grips made by Blu Magnum (mentioned above) for a S&W and they had me send in a tracing of my hand. Not sure how they use that when the grips are made, but the grips fit well and are quite beautiful. I have no experience with their Single Action Grips

The dark set of grips was made from a crotch figured walnut. That was one of the best sets that I have ever made.

Jack Huntington http://www.jrhadvancedgunsmithing.com/ does grips made to fit and I can personally attest to the improvement in shooting comfort they provide. He (at least on Bisley frames like what I sent him) will also modify the metal a bit to optimize fit for your hand.
