A Bowen 44 Special from back in the day you could buy one direct from his site.

That 44 Special is a looker!! Bisley hammers add that extra "elegance" for lack of a better term.....

Pinto Horse Vs Paint (6 Unique Similarities and Differences)

The primary difference is that a Paint is a specific breed with strict bloodline requirements (American Paint Horse Association), while a Pinto is a color pattern (phenotype) that can appear on any breed. All American Paint Horses are Pintos, but not all Pinto horses are American Paint Horses.

Folks might have missed that it was a conversion. ;)
You may be right. "Drop cylinder" conversions are a little annoying and since all mine are gated except for the ROA's, I have been on a mission to fix that, off and on, for 10 years!! I talk with Walt often and now FINALLY I've got this as a "proof of concept" conversion. It's just more convenient to load and unload with cylinder remaining on board.
So, with a Gated Conversion (obviously using a Kirst cyl.) that would pretty much make the ROA the most versatile revolver ever produced!! From "charcoal burner" to basically "Ruger only" on one platform!

Mike

Thanks. I was not aware that a "gated" conversion was even available. Looks good. $$$$??
Well, it's not available (at least not yet), like I said mine is the first. This is definitely a CUSTOM ( as the threads title), it's the ONLY but discussion is appreciated. Walt would like to offer it.
Thanks!!

Mike

I see a loading trough. I don't see a loading gate. Is the gate there but opened? If so can you show the gate closed?
The "gate" isn't necessarily the important part to this particular equation, the fact that you can "load" and "unload" with the cyl. installed is the major issue. I will install a gate after initial range trip. The redesign of the ratchet to allow insertion of the rounds is the major problem with the ROA.

I wouldn't really call this a "custom" myself....but:

This is my old 3-Screw, nickle plated, polished aluminum XR-3 grip frame, high-polished stainless NM ERH, and collared NM base pin. I bought the holly wood grips off of a previous member who doesn't post here any longer....Over the years, this thing has been rebuilt twice. Not a single one of it's original action parts remain. It's last rebuild also required a cylinder bushing be fabricated/installed to correct an excessive end shake condition. That is also when I installed the new (collared) base pin. If you look closely at the photo(s), you can see that it's nickled trigger got replaced with a blued trigger from one of Ruger's infamous "safety conversion" kits which I modified to work with the original-type lock work....All in all, not as nice as others that's been posted....but I like it.
Yeah thats a really cool 3 screw

Well, we could try and get it back on course. :) But I guess if we need to carry on the horse theme we could go with a Shetland pony I suppose.

This gun is rather divisive, a regular love it or leave it.
Came to me as a parts pile. No base pin, no grips and damaged barrel and ERH.
Seems that when they stripped the hole where you attach the ejector rod housing they simply attempted to weld the housing to the barrel.
Well , that did not work and the parts were trashed.
As the barrel needed to be replaced anyway, I figured I had nothing to lose,,,,,,,,, Hacksaw snubby time.
Along the way it got an RW grip frame and a SBH hammer and a Bisley trigger. The dovetailed front sight was supposd to be changed for somthing better looking after I tuned it to the proper height. But it is working so well I never get around to swapping it out.
Not a gun for full house 44 ammo but a "Hoot to Shoot" when downloaded.

What an awesome snub

That's interesting and a great accomplishment for using cartridge cylinders! Don't cap and ball revolvers have a half cock notch for loading the black powder cylinder and placing the caps on the nipples? I'm wondering why the ratchet needs redesigning. Thx.

Yessir, they have a half cock notch but the problem is the design of the "hole pattern" instead of a normal ratchet. The circumference of which isn't cartridge clearance friendly.
20260324_210932.jpg

The Kirst cylinder moves the hole pattern to a piece housed in the conversion ring, which turns a six sided extension of the cylinder itself.
20260324_213246.jpg

With the ring removed, you can load /unload the cylinder. There is no room to allow for cartridges to be loaded/unloaded with this "ratchet" setup.

So, the trick is to go to a "conventional ratchet" and a 2 fingered hand

Opening part of the ring and a few mods later, you get to a functioning setup

I'll be testing it this week.

Main purpose is for a single platform that can easily go from bp to upper 45C loads.

I believe I swapped a M94 45 Colt with you when you lived outside Houston.

I guess you missed mine in post #26
I really don't have a problem removing the cylinder for loading cartridges or BP

No, I saw your post. They look nice but personally I prefer Kirst cylinders so I can shoot tier2 ammo. The Howell type cylinders don't have 100% support for the cartridge case to back up to. I have 5 ROA's and they're the only ones with drop cylinders, I prefer gated conversions. All my other conversions have gated Kirst conversions.

All of these and my ROA's regularly shoot +p ammo in 45acp or 45C.

I Lived just outside the Cut 'N Shoot Texas town limits for 30 years, and distinctly remember buying a chrome plated OM .357 Blackhawk from you, and later meeting you somewhere close to Porter Texas to swap some gun parts....And now that you mention it, I did have a M94 Winchester rifle in .45-Colt caliber that I used to keep in my hot-shot truck when running interstate loads. I can't remember exactly where I got that one so yeah, it's possible that it came from you too.....I'm thinking that those events had to be around 20-25 years ago....At any rate, the Blackhawk in my post#51 is not the gun I got from you. Your's was much nicer. Almost too nice to shoot really.

Good to hear from you.

Very nice. OK I'm a whip. All I shoot is the equivalent,or less to a BP Colt load

OK I'm a whip.
No your not!!! 😆
I certainly didn't mean it that way . . . I just happen to know what the Kirst cyls can handle (pressure wise) so I'm really testing the BP platforms. Howell makes a nice product but it's not a good tool for my tests.

Mike

No I did not take any offence. I was trying to be funny and failed. I used my ROAs in SASS matches so that is why I shot the lighter loads.
A full 45 Colt case of 3F and a 250 gr. bullet is pretty stout and fun to shoot and really fun at night.

My new model 41 mag
Super grip frame, hammer, trigger and free spin pawl. I belive the base pin ain't original either.
Funny thing is, I wanted to build one like this but with a 10" barrel. I even bought the donor gun to have done up. I was walking a gun show last year, and I couldn't believe my eyes when I ran upon this one. The old fart didn't even know it was not factory. He's been selling at shows since I was in diapers. Kind of a jackwagon. Anyway. I bought it.
