Couple 45's

I bought the 45 long colt quite a while ago and later got the 45acp birdshead. I was shooting the birdshead one day and thought I would see it the cylinders would interchange. To my delight they did, the headspace was right on and the timing also right on. So now I can shoot either cartridge out of either revolver. I prefer the 45acp as the shells are more available and cheaper.

Not an uncommon occurrence.

I'd watch swapping things around closely so you don't get them mixed up, and if something were to happen to you,,, someone else might not know you swapped them.

For guns that I swap cylinders I keep a note rolled up in one chamber of each cyl with the serial # of the gun it came with. After shooting and cleaning the guns, I put the note back in the cyls when I put the guns back in the safe. Even if the cyl is in the right guns.

Actually I won't need to do that in this case. The 45acp cylinder has the last 3 digits of the serial number stamped on the end where the bullets exit. The 45 long colt does not.

You are lucky. I had a NM Blackhawk 45LC/45ACP convertible and there was no way that the 45ACP cylinder would fit in any of the 3 other 45LC NM's that I have.

As to getting mixed up on which cylinder is in the gun, note that .45 Colt Cartridges will not fully enter the ACP cylinder. And ACP cartridges will slip down too deep in the Colt cylinder. So little likelihood of posing and danger.

As to auxiliary cylinder interchange, here is a box I used to store the unused cylinder:



The cylinder for the 7 1/2" barreled gun fits only the gun it was fitted to, while the other cylinder fits three different Blackhawks/Vaqueros.

I’ve related this elsewhere, but it’s my favorite cylinder swapping tale. My kid brother bought an early New Model Blackhawk in 45 Colt (only, not convertible). I was at a gun show quite a while later and lo and behold, what should I see on a table but a red felt sack holding an orphan 45 ACP cylinder, priced at an embarrassingly low number befitting its orphan status. Too good to pass up, and when I got it home to him we were both surprised when it not only dropped in to fit and function perfectly, but shot better groups than the original. Life is strange!

Converted a blue Blackhawk .45 convertible to a Bisley and luckily found a .45 Colt Bisley cylinder. Perfect drop in fit and functions great.
Have a stainless .45 Bisley convertible but never thought of trying the .45 acp cylinder in the blue converted one. Off to the safe I go!
