Those puffs of oil/solvent coming out of a cleaned and oiled rifle sure showed up at high power matches as the 1st fouling/sighting shots were fired of the day. All up and down the firing line, little puffs of smoke. Yep that would be bad for any sniper military or police.

As well as water from a canteen.
I was shooting a 94 winchester carbine, ran a couple magazines through it before dog walking. They get hot fast with the light barrel. The dogs were ready to go, but the gun was uncomfortably hot to hold, so I poured some water down the chamber and out the bore, shook it clear to be sure. It worked quite well, we walked, I checked it after getting home, ran a patch through it, couldnt tell any issues.
I also swabbed/sloshed out a barrel and cylinder with river water when shooting black powder in a Super as a kid. Got it running again. No problems
In my silhouette days we would spray the barrel exterior with rubbing alcohol between critters.
