I looked at a .357 - 9mm convertable 3 screw and it has a conversion kit. About 3/8 inch in front of the serial number is engraved with an electric pencil and " R ".

My question, is this a normal mark today for a converted revolver from Ruger?

Never heard of this. Normally there's an "R" stamped on the bottom of the main frame, hidden by the grip frame.

However . . . with Ruger, never say "never".

:)

wow, I would seriously 'doubt' the factory would mark the outside surface with an electric pencil,BUT never know ,they may have hired a new kid and he just "thought" thats what they meant when they said to mark the frame with an 'R', after they converted it.....tsk, tsk

never know, just "maybe" it was the original ( or one of the subsequent) previous 'owners' way of marking their "personal property", seen that done all too often over the years, and with every type of 'ID' out there, name, address SS number, phone number, whatever...I KNOW, we used to refinish and remove all that "crap" for customers over the years...........

Ruger installs a "safety conversion" kit into any Old Model sent in for any reason. It provides for a "transfer bar" that requires the trigger to be fully depressed before the hammer's blow can be transferred to the firing pin. It's basically the same arrangement as the New Model action.

Click Here http://www.ruger.com/pdf/safetyOfferAd.pdf for their announcement.

They replace the standard, since Dec. of '53 to the advent of the New Models, lockwork to one that contains a "transfer bar".

A very controversial conversion amongst many users. They DO return your original lockwork, However, I will remove my original lockwork prior to shipping.

I've actually had some "good" things occur while my "3 Screw" was in for the conversion.....

There are several more in my collection. All are used as shooters. And, yes, I reinstalled the "Old Model" lockwork which, in some cases, was modified to "suite my fancy". :D

Flatgate I still love that pic of your plum old model super. After seeing for years it just never gets old to see it. I do however miss Star Valley after being up there weekly for 4 years it kind leaves a empty spot not to be able to go up there

It appears that it was just something that some one engraved for the sake of putting something on the gun.
