Just before i retired in 2006, my company gave me a beautiful grandfather clock, cherry cabinet, chimes and moon phases, and telling the time as well.
I was explaining the chimes; once for quarter past the hour, twice for half past, three strikes for quarter 'til the hour, and striking the number of hours.
"How do you know whether its one o'clock or quarter past the hour?" I was asked.
"Before striking the hour, the clock chimes a brief tune," I explained.
Then: "How do you know whether its A.M. or P.M.?"
"We look out the window for that. Dark, its A.M. Light its P.M."
