Ok, sorry, I know I've posted about the Post Office, let's say, snafus, before, but I just can't help it. And, for some reason, it always seems to be with my medications. Anyway, here goes.

It's called 'giving it a ride' and is often the result of slow processing of packages but can also be any type of mail with tracking numbers. Hypothetical scenario: Mail is 'scanned' onto a manifest of each trailer load. This means that any/all later scans of the trailer ID keys each numbered item on that transport to a specific location or action. Let's say a shift isn't making acceptable progress with mail sorting. Toward end of shift, a Supervisor decides the dock must be cleared for access to incoming or outgoing mail so the trailer is redirected to another facility or maybe just a ride around the 'business loop' to arrive a few hours later. I advised the Representative for north MO as to what/how this was being played out with mail processing in St Louis, KC MO and KC KS mail processing facilities. 'Over run mail' was being shipped back and forth across the state to make mail processing look more efficient shift to shift in these facilities. :rolleyes:

I've been retired from USPS for 16 years but still remember enough of the transport routes to be able to follow the movement from one 'mail distribution center' to another and see the patterns.
KCMO & KS/St Louis/Chicago have been notoriously inept for decades.
Another issue during the upcoming holidays is airport stagnation. Passenger flights fill the airspace.

The post office has been mis-run for many years, and only became much worse during the covid shutdowns. Trump had talked about privatizing the USPS, but I have not heard anymore in the past year.

I'm having a similar experience with USPS, with a package that originated in North Carolina 16 days ago, and has yet to leave the state. Just copied this from tracking, so the starting point is at the bottom (Youngsville NC), with the most recent location (Raleigh NC) at the top. As an FYI, Raleigh is 22 miles from Youngsville, so that's 16 days to travel a net 22 miles from the sender:

And yes, I verified that the sender has my correct address. At the current rate of travel (1.375 miles per day), it will take just over 2.9 years for USPS to deliver my package - sure am glad that I'm paying their higher holiday season rates for the service...

EDIT: So, it actually got to the Cheyenne Wyoming Distribution Center at 2am this morning (Nov 29, 19 days after USPS accepted the package)! Was hoping they would deliver it today, because my post office is only about 50 feet from the distribution center, and they had 4+ hours to walk it over - but tracking isn't currently showing any further movement. So, looks like Monday for delivery, which would make it an even 3 weeks from Youngsville NC to my mail box. And it isn't even December yet!

EDIT #2: Actually got here today (Nov 29) - local folks got it to the post office & out for delivery mid-morning (hours later than usual)! Looks like everything worked the way it was supposed to, once the package reached Raleigh NC. Thank you, USPS!

The only goofy delivery I had that worried me a little was when an old Security Six shipped from Arizona to Illinois. I think it was 16 days total …… package went from AZ to TX to GA to St Louis but …. Then back to GA, on to FL and sat a few days with no update. Next it was reported to be in Puerto Rico! From there somebody got it on the right track.

Got my moneys worth on tracking too!

I got an interesting one today. I just sat down at the table and noticed a mailing envelope. I didn’t remember ordering anything and was looking at it and noticed it had my address in the corner as the shipper. I thought that’s weird, and there was a label over the address it was sent. It had Ty’s name sticking out under the label. Then I noticed it had never been opened. I mailed it to Tyrone March 5. Where it’s been all this time I have no idea.

Despite all the complaints and gripes, consider the bachelor rancher at the end of the road North Dakota or the visually impaired widow 14 miles from town who can't drive and whose only contact with the outside world is the mail carrier. I've seen both sides of this and often those complaining aren't the ones most dependent on the delivery services.
My family has served the public as part of the Post Office/USPS from 1917 to 2009 with only 3 years break in that span (Dad retired in 1980 and I was hired in 1983) but if you count the period when Dad's and Grampa's service overlapped (1949-1961) that's over a century of service. During most of that time, it really was SERVICE including a lot of mail delivery by horseback or horse drawn 'mail hack'. For some folks, the mail carrier was the ONLY contact with another human as they didn't even have a phone.
I'm not happy with what USPS has become and saw the oncoming train 20 years ago but it's still a necessity for some Americans.

At this point, I do not remember if this was USPS or UPS, but in that most of the time, if I am getting something UPS moves it from point A to point B, and then USPS brings it to my door. SO, I had a package that was coming from the east heading west, it made it a few halfway wests and then went back to the east/northeast. The package be-bopped around finally making it to Tulsa OK about 2 hours south from me (OK, I should arrive tomorrow or the day after. WRONG!! I went to OKC, OK, then back to Tulsa, at this point it did start the trip to my house, which meant Wichita, then Independence KS (I do not know why it had to go to Wichita and not straight to Indy. Indy is a distribution center for SE Ks, so I would think they could sort stuff) after it made it to Independence, I did get it the next day.
There are times I wonder if things get mis-sorted and sent for a ride due to that, there are other times I wonder if the person who said that stuff is sent for a ride because they are clearing the floor, so they scan it, put it in a container and get it out the building. I do not remember if it was this package or another but the get it moving in any direction because it's been here too long, does not possibility, in that I had one that sat at a location for a few days and when it moved it was away from me and did some weird movements around the country.

They are not the only to 'screw up". UPS sent me a notification that two items had bee delivered on Saturday. They said there was a photo of the delivery. Two items . The one photo showed the delivery person's left foot. The other photo showed a red door, which is NOT on my home. Finally figured out that whoever actually got them had realized where they belonged and delivered them to our mail box.

The USPS is a wee bit less efficient than in the "Old Days."

In 1971 I was onboard the USS Independence CVA/CV-62 in the middle of a Med cruise. My parents had a good friend who owned an apple orchard in western Mass. He sent me a box of 30 Red delicious apple in a styrofoam box with 30 individual compartments , one for each apple. He mailed the package marked "Fragile, Fresh fruit" at 0902 (according to the postmark) in Springfield, Mass. I received it the next day at 1430. With the time zone difference it only took 19 1/2 hours to reach me. Some how it had to make every connection exactly on time. It went from Springfield, Mass, to the FPO New York, to Naples, Italy where it got onto the COD for delivery to the underway ship.

The next cruise a friend's mother sent him a "Care package" in March so he would have it for Easter. I was a 3 lb. coffee can filled with chocolate chip cookie, jelly beans and foil covered chocolate eggs. His name and address was written on the can with magic marker. The can was then double wrapped with brown paper with his address on each layer. It arrived in mid-July. It had a small piece of brown paper with his address taped to the outside. Most of the paint had worn off the can like it had been sitting somewhere vibrating against something that polished the paint off. There was a 2" layer of cookie crumbs fused to the jelly beans by the melted chocolate in the bottom of the can. His mother had mailed a letter the same day to let him know it was coming.

I recently had 3 payments go out, 1 to FL and 2 to PA. The shortest time from NC to any of them was 2 weeks. The other 2 took 3 weeks.

Our communal mailbox lock has been broken since early February, so we have had to drive the 11 mile round trip to the USPS substation once a week to pick up our mail.
They keep telling us the replacement communal mailbox is on back order.

A friend rented our condo in Kitty Hawk over Thanksgiving and mailed us the key on December 1st, Well… the key arrived today12/11, we just ran the tracking on it, as my friend said it was mailed out on the 1st of Dec, well it went to NC first (expected as all Bedford Va mail goes to Charlotte first like that makes any sense), then it went to Texas, then to Pennsylvania before coming back to Virginia. No wonder the USPS is losing money out the wazoo, eleven days and four states to go 100 miles

At least your package went back to the hub for a redo. My FedEx package has been out for delivery with Antwone since 1:05 AM Monday. FedEx has loooooonnnnnngggg shifts.
