the cholla is incorrestly named. it should be called the "rabid pit bull" plant.

What do you call a pit bull with 5 legs? happy

Back in the early 70's, backpacking smugglers would try to make marijuana runs from the Nogales area north toward Tuscon.
It was rumored that the Feds had at one time planted cholla to discourage this practice.
Nasty stuff, I watched two hippies sit with needlenose pliars and rubbing alcohol trying to get some cholla out of their stomachs, thighs and pretty much every where else on them.

I've had cholla cactus growing on the south side of my houses in Missouri and Kansas. I call it my "attack cactus". They're pretty when they bloom, but the flowers don't last long.

Beautiful flowers, I've always admired them. From a safe distance.

I've seen cholla spikes that stick to a gun barrel! Had a cluster attack the grips of a Single-Six once - and I ended up refinishing the right panel to get the spines out!

Nasty enough to use as a "get even" weapon if you've someone you really hate!
