carrying moon clips?

i am getting a lcr 9mm, how do i carry reloads in the spare moon clips? never owned a revolver with moon clips, i would like to carry 1-2 spare reloads. thanks

I carry speed strips, they work well but take some practice(like most things) to get used to and aren't as fast as throwing in a full moon. You can carry plenty of extra ammo, conceal it easily, but you can only load two bullets at a time.

Yep, and the reason I don't carry a gun that utilizes them.

They won't work with a 9mm DA revolver since the rimless case can't be ejected at all efficiently without the moon clips.

The only company I know of that makes a carrier for loaded moon clip is Allesi gun leather.

When I carry my 9 mm LCR I carry a backup 380 S&W Bodyguard.

i hope i can come up with something as i'm supposed to pick the gun up tuesday. the shop also ordered a charter pitbull 9mm, love the thought of no moon clips but don't no about charter quality. it's also only $40 less than the ruger. thanks

If your going to insist on carrying that gun, and expect to carry extra ammo, it would be easier.....and faster......to simply carry two guns.......it is called a "New York Reload". They even make holsters for it....... :D

Just put them in a front pocket or in a camera or cell phone pouch on your belt. Or you could carry 5 cartridges in a speed strip for after you eject the first clip. Those last 5 would have to be ejected with a pencil or something. :D

In a few minutes,,, I'm headed out for a USPSA match. I'm shooting in the Revolver category today. There are many ways to carry spare moon clips, & each person has to figure out the way to do so for their own purposes. I find that a pouch type of carry for CCW is often slow in recovering much needed ammo. I have felt completely comfortable using the metal & plastic, belt clip on speed type of moon carrier as a way to carry spare loaded moon clips. The stainless belt clip & base, holds the plastic ammo holder with spring tension. When used where the ammo is inserted inside the metal & all around the plastic,,, it's quite secure, yet easily & quickly accessible. In competition, I slip two rounds inside the carrier & allow the other 4 to hang off the carrier on the outside for increased speed in reloading. Not a good idea if a lot of movement is necessary or for daily carry.
I'll see if I can get a pic of one up later today to help explain.

That's why I went with the .357 LCR where you can carry .38+P if you can't handle the .357 loads.
However hot 9mm can be quite jumpy too.

Some containers for prescription drugs will hold two of the 9mm clips securely. Some cotton or tissue paper in the bottom can help reduce noise.

Why can't you just dedicate a pocket for one or two moon clips? I reload wih my support hand and carry two speed loaders in left pocket with nothing else in the pocket. I'd imagine moon clips would even be easier with a support hand reload. I've never used moon clips though I'd imagine they be strong if ruger built them.

pezo,,, in a pocket, you can get lint, dirt, etc that could possibly stop the actual reload when needed. Moon clips are a bit more finicky than loose rounds from a regular speed loader.

I can give you a story on the charter. I bought one in early October , It had ftf, light primer strikes every other round up till round 37 when the mainspring broke. I took it back to the shop , traded it in on a Blackhawk convertible 9/357. it was truly a piece of junk :roll: . Do a little search on problems with the pitbull , like I should have before I made the purchase. :wink:

Awkward to carry and easily bent.

Uncle Mikes makes a soft speed loader case that works and doesn't look as silly as the hard leather HKS pouches.

i have thought of buying a 357 carry gun so to not worry about the problems with 9mm revolvers, but i have so much 9mm ammo, right now i have somewhere of a little less than 4000rds. i thought i can sell the 9mm ammo and buy 357 but i'll only have half as much since where i get my ammo 357 is twice the price of 9mm in hollow points. i have until tomorrow or tuesday to decide as the 9mm comes in then. also the 357 lcr is only $419 on sale for Christmas, the 9mm is $469 on sale. each is $20 less than the regular store price. thanks

If you buy the 357 you can practice with 38 special and 38+P rounds. I have an SP101 with a shaved hammer that shoots 357 loads nicely because it's a fairly heavy gun. I chose the LCR in 38(+P) because of how light it is compared the 357 version(aluminum vs steel) and I certainly don't feel under gunned with a 38+P. A 357 LCR is a very versatile choice and still very lighweight.

A speed strip will work as your only/last reload since it takes time to push the empties out with a rod.

A single 5 shot moon clip fits nicely in one of the old 35 mm film cans -- or a pill vial.

Fast reloads are for games, movies and shooting schools. The odds of needing a reload are slim, unless you are a particularly bad shooter and in that case you will probably be shot before you empty your gun. Often just the presentation of a firearm is enough to difuse a situation. A speed strip in the front pants pocket gives me more than enough comfort, just in case. If you are going to enter a situation where you think 10 rounds or more may be necessary, then carry a pistol with a detachable magazine, preferably one with sufficient capacity, or find somewhere else to go. JMHO

Del Fattie Leather makes what is called a PMC for 9mm moon clip carry. I carry my LCR 9mm in one pocket and two PMC's in other pocket. The PMC is easy to grasp and keeps the clean and protected.
