Can I ask a favour of members with folding-stock carbines?

Hi

I'm in Canada, and looking at getting a 10/22.

I would like a "tactical carbine" (model #01261, 16.12" barrel) and I want to put a folding stock on it.

I looked on this forum (and on others) to find the exact length of carbines with folding stocks. Couldn't find anything specific.

I did the math on-line and I think the tac carbine with a Butler Creek folder (folded) is 24 7/8", and can be up to 25 6/8" by substituting the John Masen long flash hider sold at Brownell's. I could be wrong - I was going by posts I could find, and subtracting the difference between the 18.5" barrel and the carbine barrel.

Problem is that in Canada minimum length is calculated with the stock folded, and the minimum legal length is 25 15/16" (660mm). SO CLOSE!

I want to find a folder which will *for sure* meet the minimum length requirements when folded.

Can any of you guys with folders (any brand) on a tactical carbine please take a moment and measure the overall length with your stock folded, and post it here?

Also, does anyone know of any brand of flash hider longer than 3 3/8"? It can't be a "fake suppressor" because those are not allowed here.

For threaded barrels, DPMS offers a 5.5" long XM-177 style hider.

Well that's good news in case I need to add some length. I'd rather not have to though, if it can be avoided.

Excuse if this is a dumb question, but will *any* threaded AR flash hider fit a 10/22? If I'm going to get a long one I'd like to to be M-14 style.

If you get the 10/22 with the threaded barrel, it is the same thread used on AR15s, 1/2"-28tpi.

If it has a flash suppressor, then it's threaded... there was a bull barrel Tactical Target model, as well as Compliant versions of the SR-22 which were not threaded and had no muzzle attachments included from the factory.

Thanks for the info. That's good news about the threaded barrels. Now i can order one of the carbines with the flash hider, and know that in the worst case scenario I can graft a longer flash-hider onto it. I can tack-weld it to make it "permanent" as per the law.

Before I "pull the trigger", can anyone post the folded length of a Butler Creek stock on a short-barrel 10/22?

Comment on personal observations on folder 10/22:

decades ago I simply had to have a folding 10/22. After much effort located a then-current AMT 10/22 and used it for years. It was never actually very satisfying, as it was heavy, clunky and poorly balanced. While it was short when folded, it never really satisfied my fantasy.

One issue was the material & shape of the recoil pad. It was some kind of rubber, and while it did provide comfort when mounted to shoulder, the grabby qualities of the material made clumsy mounting every time. Along with the overly large functional shape of the pad meant never once in the use of the carbine, did it simply just slip into place without extra effort & attention.

A positive feature, was folded carry on a strap in the woods was perhaps somewhat convenient.

No issues with the AMT platform, just the folding stock itself. Finally traded it off.

The Take Down 10/22 is of a different concept. Don't know what Canadian law may have to say about that. In practical use, many of the annoying factors of the folding 10/22 are eliminated.

all good points. My reason for wanting a folder is this rifle is specifically for my BOB/earthquake kit. I want it to fit into a compact area (backpack full of provisions) but be in a ready-to-fire state). Takedowns are legal here, but I don't want to be fiddling around with a TD if I am in a hurry or injured.

Cool thanks. I went with the ATI because local dealer was out of Butler Creek stocks. Will measure the completed gun once I have time to put it together. This is a good reference for other Canadians looking to do the same thing.

Get a Ruger Charger 10/22 and it's short enough already where you can add a few Charger specific Tactical stocks and an AFG (no vertical grip tho) and call it tactical..... :D

I have an ATI stock on one of my mini-14s and don't care for it... just too heavy and bulky for my taste.... the reason I installed it was the front sight on this mini is off and the best and easiest way to 'fix' the problem was to install a simple red dot... on an ATI stock.

You are correct, no rifle stock permitted on the Charger. However there are black tactical looking pistol stocks avail for the Charger, making it nice and compact. Add a Red Dot, a front lower rail and use an AFG or Flashlight, with built in grip (as long as it is not a vertical grip).

Not to get into a huge discusion about Canada's totally confusing gun laws, but the "long and the short" of it is that the Charger is categorized as a pistol, and ALL pistols are designated as "restricted" firearms here - range use only. I have my restricted license, but I only have non-restricted guns because I like to use them in the woods, etc.

Plus I already have my rifle. :D
