Calculating Front Sight Height?

At 25 yds, my 9mm Combat Commander is shooting 4" high (when using a 6 o'clock hold).

At 25 yds, my 9mm Combat Commander is shooting 4" high (when using a 6 o'clock hold).

5.75" (sight radius) x 4" (error) divided by 25yds (distance) = .92

Is it possible my existing front sight needs to be .92" higher?

The height of the current sight is .156.

Seems like adding .92 to that would make a 1.07 front sight extremely high.

What am I missing here? :?:

By my (quick) calculation, your front sight needs to be .0255" higher (or the rear sight .0255" lower).

Two other things you can do to bring your shots down:

1. Shoot lighter bullets.

2. Hold the gun much more firmly. I don't mean (only) grip, I mean stance. Try a very strong Weaver stance, and lean forward (not back) as you shoot.

The way I have done it in the past:
1. Distance from firearm to target 25 yards times 36 inches in a yard = 900 inches.
2. 900 inches divided by sight radius 5 inches(?) = 180 (in this example).
3. What this number tells you is that for a .001 change in the front sight height it will move the point of impact 180 times that at the target at 25 yards.
4. The other side of the problem is if your point of impact is 5 inches high, 5 divided by 180 =.0277777 which is how much you will need to move your front sight up to bring the point of impact down 5 inches.
Substitute your actual sight radius (in 2 above) where I had the 5 inch sight radius and divide that into the 900 to get your actual ratio, then divide the distance you want to move by that ratio to see how much taller of a front sight you will need.
