Bought a new replacement battery for the Saturn

So my trany went out on the 2015 Silverado, while hauling the Amish crew. So I'm driving the wife's old Saturn, for a while.
The battery is not dependable so went to have it tested and needs replaced. Small not much bigger than a double lawn mower battery. Well, as all things now adays, $199.95 + tax. Core charge would have been $22.00. Just glad I saved my money all those working years. Overloadded
 
My brother has been driving our dad’s 1997 Saturn SL2 since he passed in 2002. It has 370,000 miles on the clock and is running with its 3rd transmission.
It looks almost new, but has never had any cosmetic work.
 
I bought one at O’Reillys. I brought in 4 batteries 1 for the core and 3 for store credit. After the core and the credits $55 the clerk said I paid the price from 2 months ago.

Bought a battery for my Chevy Silverado from Costco a couple of months ago. $121.00, pretty good size battery,
Core charge of $15 but I had an exchange.
This month I had to replace battery in stand-by generator, $99 with exchange.
 
Our Interstate brand equipment batteries are up about 25% over the last 12 to 18 months and the core charge charges have doubled in the same time frame.
 
Not sure any batteries are manufactured in the US anymore. Recycling plants have been closing down with attendant massive cleanup costs. All while batteries are becoming more and more prevalent.

You think they are expensive now? Just wait until more and more battery powered vehicles and home power systems are used.
 
And just think; They want you to convert to battery driven POWER TOOLS for all uses. How have those costs been going up ?
ME ?? I prefer PLUG in tools even if it requires a long power cord !
 
The local starter repair business sells Interstate. We do a fair amount of business with him and he doesn't beat us up on prices. The low use equipment gets 'returned' batteries that are tested but have only short warranties--so far this has been a good decision since all of those we've installed are 2-3 years old w/o any problems at all. A quick finger count says we have around 30 batteries in service.
We pay far more attention to battery cables these days because hooking up a new battery with a weak or defective cable is foolish.
 
I'm sure that China loves our EPA. China is who we import NEW lead from.
Geeee I wonder why lead bullets have gone up so much in the last 20 years??

Doe Run had hoped to bring the revolutionary lead metal production technology online prior to the closure of the smelter. This proprietary, new technology uses a wet-chemical, electrowinning process instead of a heat-based smelting process, greatly reducing sulfur dioxide and lead emissions. In 2012, the company announced that costs to build an electrowinning plant similar in production size to the smelter were too great for the company given the present economic conditions and other demands on operations.

"Nearly every lead-acid battery produced in the U.S. is using lead metal that at some point originated with our mines and smelters," stated Aaron Miller, Doe Run's chief operating officer. "Today, much of the demand for lead and lead alloys can be met through recycling. However, specialty applications, as well as material for market growth, will have to come from foreign sources in the future. Without an adequate supply of imported lead, demand in the U.S. will soon outpace availability of lead metal."
 
China produces over 75% of the batteries manufactured. I think Napa and Interstate are USA produced. Cost of materials and recycling is major factor in pricing, along with availability due to the Quarantine.

All lawn equipment is going Battery, and lithium battery! Most power tools are going battery too. These are considered Haz Mat and will be a PITA to recycle anywhere. Sometimes it seems that we create two problems for every single problem we try and fix!?

I had a 2002 and absolutely loved it. I finally sold it because it became almost impossible to find after-market parts. I used to do nationwide junkyard searches too. I did a lot of part mods over the years, but finally had enough. Awesome car though.
 
Meanwhile in CA:

June 30 (Reuters) - California on Thursday approved a plan to tax the electric vehicle battery metal lithium to generate revenue for environmental remediation projects despite industry concerns that it will harm the sector and delay shipments to automakers.

June 29 (Reuters) - A proposed flat-rate tax on lithium produced in California's Salton Sea region will delay deliveries of the electric vehicle battery metal to General Motors Co (GM.N) and Stellantis NV (STLA.MI) and may push some mining companies to exit the state entirely, industry executives told Reuters.

These are new startup mines and the owners are just saying - we'll go to Utah or Arkansas where there are also deposits. GM was also going to build a battery plant close by. Tax was to be $400 a ton on a product that is selling for $6,800 a ton - really takes the profit out of it.
 
I kind of have to laugh a bit in regard to the building of lithium battery plants, Many years ago I ran dry room production in such a plant. We worked in humidity controlled rooms because lithium and water don't mix well ( Think BOOM ). Fire extinguishing systems were ceiling mounted and sprayed graphite instead of water. Anyway, all waste materials went into barrels which were later sprayed with water to to inactivate trace lithium that may have gotten into it. However, on several occasions more than a trace got in and there were several decent explosions ( luckily outside).
I'm thinking that living near such a factory would n ot be pleasant, and may bring down home values. Good luck California.
