Shoulder Replacement...

Speedy recovery, and please keep us updated on your progress. I'm going in on the 2nd for another shot in my right one. I got about four months of relief, but I've been told a replacement is in my near future.

Good morning.
Yesterday I received a bionic shoulder. The nerve block is so effective I still have no feeling in my shoulder. But the nerve bundle silenced also impacts my breathing so they wont let me go home.
Maybe today .
;)

.
Feeling will come back soon enough. Just listen to the docs, and don't rush it. Let it heal.

Hey. Glad to see you. I had both of mine operated on. Next time it’s replacement. Just take it easy. That nerve block is a biotch when it wears off. Good luck!

Did you have a reverse shoulder replacement by chance? I have had three rotator cuff surgeries and the 6 months pt on each. Doc says if I tear them again it’s the reverse shoulder replacement option. Yech.
Get well.
Yes this was a reverse replacement.

I feel for you, @WAYNO! I had a reverse replacement done on my right shoulder last August. Everything was going along just great until about December, when my regular Physical Therapist took some time off. The gal that they had cover for her was obviously trained in a totally different school. She had me doing exercises that my regular therapist hadn't even considered. Bottom line: I'm now waiting to see an Orthopedic Surgeon to discuss a 'revision!' In surgical speak, revision means that something or someone screwed up, and we have to fix it! So, probably the end of April or first of May, I get to do it all again! And I have been in pain since December. My point would be this: if you think that your therapist is going overboard, STOP! Tell them, and if they don't change their behavior, find another one! My surgeon told me that this happens frequently.

It is day 3. I have been miserable. Had a fever last night and my docTor said go to the ER. I did so and three hours later they said I am fine and sent me home with a whole additional ER fee,

I am a little bit feeling better today. Oh please let me sleep.
How old are you? I had my replacement done 4 years ago at 75 and it was painful as could be afterward. I think younger is better but you still gotta suck it up and do everything they tell you to do at home and then when physical therapy starts. As far as I'm concerned, PT is the most important but is tough.
In the beginning I got a couple of bone heads that didn't seem highly qualified and knowledgeable. Then got a woman who was brilliant, patient, and positive. I made strides forward quickly. Seek out a good one. You'll know it when you see and hear it. Just tough it out, it'll pay off.

I've had several surgeries. Worst part is always PT......I don't like taking narcotics but kept on a strict schedule with them as ordered. Made my total knee replacement "almost" pain free.....but a shoulder replacement, I can't even imagine the discomfort it must cause. But it will be a thing of the past soon and you will be saying how happy you were to have it done. (Hopefully). Best of luck in your recovery Wayno.

I am 73 . With many surgeries behind me I also have experienced some really over the top PT techs as well as some that really didnt do much at all. My PT person actually a PHD, when I had my knee replaced was very aggressive, He split my incision open and caused some infection. I talked to my surgeon and asked to be excluded from PT but to just do all the exercises and stretches from from home with their paper handouts. He was okay with that. and it worked for me.

Wayno, I hope you were able to get some sleep. Nothing worse than struggling through the night in pain. I guess I was just fortunate not to have any problems or pain with my reverse reconstruction. Dr said I had very dense bones, that they had to drill and tap to get the screws in. He said, that joint will never go anywhere.
PT should never be painful and you should be able to go at your own pace. Mine was surprised when she set the exercise machine at on level and I told her I wanted more weight. I want to go at my own pace. Still praying for a quick and complete recovery.

My last hospital stay wasn’t too bad….

Speaking about sleep, I don't know where you're doing it but there was only one place I could do it and it wasn't in bed. I slept in the sling but it was on a recliner chair in the living room. If you have one, use it. I was there for many weeks and would have been in pain and miserable if I hadn't.

Damn dog. Yanked my arm/shoulder out months ago, and feels useless now. Went for X-rays, and now I have arthritis there. Went to PT, and helped some, but PT loves to charge you. $600+ per 1 hour visit, which turned into maybe 10 minutes of instruction. Damn dog!

That seems expensive; mine were running about $300-350 per visit, and Medicare and Tricare for Life took care of that. If you have to return for additional therapy, ask them if they'll take less. Seriously, when they bill $600, for instance, Medicare might give them $150. Worst that they can do is say 'no!'

Wow! Three surgeries. I feel for you. I'm 15 weeks into my rotator cuff surgery. Doc said it will probably be a year or more for recovery and may not have full rotation of motion (reaching up).

All I can say about this and him is DAMN!! In his case PH.D stood for
Post Hole Digger!!

I didn’tmpaynthat. Insurance took most and I ended up with $150 pay. I stopped after 6 weeks, and exercise on my own. Good days, bad days. Price of getting old.

Wow. Sleep has been welcome when it happens. I wish I could sleep more. This has absolutely kicked my arse.
Never had shoulder surgery, but have had back and cardiac. One thing I learned is the right "bed" makes a considerable difference. In the case of cardia, it was a powered recliner. It let me get all the parts in the right alignment. The back let me know there was a reason firmer matressess are better. So try to find a bed/chair that works.

I guess you'll be hip shooting your single six for a bit. Let that shoulder heal. Praying for a speedy recovery.

My wife had a reverse shoulder replacement probably 2 and a half years ago. Pain was intense for a period of time but her biggest aggravation was that bulky shoulder strap that had a bulky block that had to be between her and her arm. It made trying to sleep very difficult. She slept in her recliner for probably 3 weeks. However she went through all of the Physical re-hab therapy and she has gotten back to about full use of the shoulder. She can reach back around behind her waist and then also up over her head to do her hair etc. She has been pretty happy with it.
