Blackhawk vs. New Frontier

I was over on the Colt forum and wrote a most eloquent dissertation comparing the Colt New Frontier and Ruger Blackhawks. Now I do own, and shoot both, though the Colts not so heavily. So I compared these guns:





The top pair are .45s, the Blackhawk having had some custom touches done to it. The bottom pair is a Colt New Frontier and a Ruger Flat Top Blackhawk .44 Special.

My observation was that I do prefer the XR-3RED grips frame on the heavier MR-44 frame. While the Flat Top nearly duplicates the Colt grip, I find that a disadvantage of sorts, preferring the slightly extra space behind the trigger guard.

(Before anybody gets ideas, all are in permanent residence in my stable.)

Other than the splotchiness on the frames, and that dark mold or whatever on the grips, those are some fairly nice-looking revolvers... :wink:

Bob, You should have made and installed Iowegan's extended hammer plungers on those beautiful custom Rugers.

I have a 2nd generation Colt SAA I bought new in the early 70's. As much as I love Ruger's single actions I have to say that the old Colt is a work of art.

I have swapped out the XR3 GF for steel XR3-RED size GFs on a few of my mid-frame flat top big kickers.
And replaced alloy XR3-RED size GFS for steel versions on my large frame Blackhawks.

You almost make me cry. Those are all very Nice Looking. I often wondered how good Stag's would look on my Colt N.F., Now I know for sure. Would you say that they have between 15 to 20 percent Bark on them?

Sounds ironic, but really the New Frontier was Colt's answer to the Ruger Blackhawk!

. . . and I've swapped steel SBH grip frames onto both NM and OM .45s. Makes for a nice arrangement.

Well i grew up around Colt and have shot just about anything Colt u can imagine...to me...the perfect SAA with adjustable sights has to be the original Blackhawk ...Colt took years to make theirs...it is nice....but i gladly prefer the Ruger.....and i love Colts...yours are so beautiful....love the case hardening too...thank u for sharing...God Bless,John

Hi , little late here but this is my first post . I must say all that color case hardening makes me a little Crazy . In a good way ! I have a Lipsey's flat top in 44 special that just needs that done , nice !
